Anyone here going to the National show?

Hi

Is anyone here going to the National card show this year? I've never been to one, but this year it's in Anaheim, not far from me. I want to go, but I looked it up and see the one-day general admission is $17.50. That's twice as much as I would have thought. I imagine, probably $8 or more for parking too.

I'm not the most serious collector, but I do enjoy looking and picking up different cards, escpecially FB and HKY rookie cards and PSAs. I'm not really into anything like autographs or jerseys, etc., just cards! Are these shows that good that they're really worth the admission fee?

Any comments, especially from someone who's been to a national?

Thanks

Jeff

  • If you've never been, it's like a card orgy...last time I went was about 13 years ago in Atlanta, but seriously thinking about heading to Cali for this show....

I think the last time i went at Anahiem we paid around $13 to $15 if i recall. We parked on a side street just sw of the convention center and it was free. We had to walk aways, but it was free.

    sandmanfromlv,

I was at that show. First year the new Georgia convention was open. I had a blast.

JeffJ99- You have to go to the National, a lot of fun and plan on spending a few hours just to take it all in and see all the booths.
  • yeah, 3 of us drove all night from Chapel Hill, NC to make it to the show in Hotlanta, we each had about $20 in our pockets, and it was tough to figure out what we wanted to buy...I think I bought a Clemens auto baseball and a pack of 53 archives....

we then drove back to Chapel Hill that afternoon (about 6 hours each way)....way tired, but well worth it!! Just wish I had enough $$$ to get the Mick's auto while I was there....to be so close, but yet so far away....that's one thing I regret that I didn't (couldn't) do...

I'm not going to make it this year, been twice before, once in Cleveland and a few years ago when it was in Atlantic City. It is absolutely insane!!! $17.50 is the most I've heard for an admission though. If you are into autographs, that's the place to be. If you are looking for something unique, also the place to be. In order to see everything, you have to get there early and plan on being there all morning/afternoon & evening. It's worth it, especially if you've never been. Do they have a website already set up?
  • The website is nsccshow.com.

Here's a link for the National

Well worth the price of admission.
Imagine a year's worth of eBay searches all in one place
and you can actually hold the stuff in your hand and look at it before you buy it.

Have been to the last three and am going again this year.

I've been to the Cleveland, Atlantic City and Chicago shows and they were all awesome. If you are looking for older stuff I think it's the only place to go. I live near Cleveland and the shows around the area have been terrible the last few years. I wanted to go to the west coast this year but just can't make it due to my work schedule. I've already told my son that once I retire I'll be driving out there for the next West Coast show......can't wait...believe they are back there in either two or three years and I'll be retired by then.
  • Start saving your pennies now. For what you are going to see it is waaaaaay worth the admission price. I have been to a bunch of Nationals and just the displays are worth it.

Where can you find a list of future locations? I would like to go when it is in Cleveland. I have never been to one, but have always wanted to go.
  • Cleveland is next year. The pre-registration forms were just sent out.

I went to the trading card show that was with the All Star game in Houston and almost went to the one in Cleveland the same year. How much $$ do you guys drop there?

We are thinking about going down. I might dump the wife and kids with Mickey and friends and then I can go spend some quality time at the National!

Watch Naxcom as the show gets closer, they have offered discount tickets the last couple of years.

heh - just woke up from dream about the National. Got down there and slowly came to realize as I'm mingling with some of the OBC guys that I've not only forgotten my money, but also my wantlist. As if!

I'll be there, perhaps all five days, but most likely four.

  • Don't count on seeing everything in just hours but days. I have been to every National since 1997 and it is a must see for everyone. Count on at least two days if you really want to get a good look at each booth and that still might not be enough time. I'm from Louisville, Kentucky and I will be flying out about three days before the convention begins.
  • I'm planning to, and it'll be my first. I haven't booked things yet, but I'm thinking of doing 3 days...
  • I'd love to go, I am not sure if I can budget the air fare.

    Jeff,
I think you should go. I could definately think of worse ways to spend $17.50!

When I've gone to the shows I've always dedicated at least two days. When it was here in Cleveland I bought one of the VIP passes, or whatever they were called which got you into a "pre-show" the night before the regular show started....it was well worth it, the pre show had free autographs, the main one I remember was Nate Thurmond who had the one great year in Cleveland. I then went everyday. The out of town shows were all at least two days, one to scout, look and make my lists of potential buys. The second day I went back to those tables and did the wheeling and dealing........I also found that sometimes you can get better deals the last day.....not always but sometimes.....I'm from Cleveland but my favorite show was the one in Chicago a few years back....it was awesome, they had a side room set up with video games......my kid loved it to...
