Scanning Help

Hello,

I know this has been discussed a lot, I keep reading old posts and can't quite figure out my problem. I want to add scans of my cards to my registered Colavito collection, but everytime I scan them the darn file is too big. I adjust the dpi down to about 75, I crop the picture, but the file size is always way over 100 k.

Why?

Thanks!
Jeff

Ok, now I was able to scan the whole card. Now it's not even doing that now. Argh!

I am using an HP Scanjet 4850 if anyone has one that could walk me through it. Thank you so much in advance!

  • You need to try to save the image as a different type of file...such as .jpg. The default file extension is probably .bmp...which will result in a huge file.

So once they ask you to save the image, hopefully there will be a drop down box where you can select the file extension. Save as .jpg and you should be good to go. I believe that you can also open the .bmp file in mspaint and save as .jpg too if you go that route.

Thank you, I have done that route too.

This is a lot of work!

    Thank you for your assistance.

I scan at 100 dpi and the picture looks bad and the file size is too big. I scan at 150 dpi the picture looks great, crop it down, and the file size is at 280 k. Too big.

  • The key is the jpeg quality factor when you save the picture. When you get the Windows save dialog box, you need to click the more button. There is a slider that lets you choose the quality (which I believe is the same as compression). If you move the slider to the middle, which is 50, you should be ok. I have an HP scanner and that's what I do.

  • BarkusD,

Thanks for the jpeg tip -- that was what I was missing when I tried to save my scans.

    BaseballJeff,

I found success recently by doing the following:

    Click on the Start button
    Open the Control Panel
Click on Printers and other hardware
    Click on Scanners and Cameras
Open the Scanner icon in the new window
A Windows scanning wizard pops up, click next
Highlight or click on Custom, set it to 100dpi, click Preview -- wait for it to scan the card
Adjust the dotted lines to surround the card, click next
Name the file and select jpeg in the drop down menu, click next
Wait for the scanner to stop again. (The file should be saved now)

Locate and Open the newly named file
    Edit and crop as necessary
    Resave the file.
Check the properties to see how large the file is.

By doing this I had the card scan come out to about 58-65 KB each. Check it out if you like. Hope this helps . . .
