Collectors Universe Info

I found this interesting from Collectors universe pr team. Quite a few cards graded last quarter.

I am new to the board, learning lots reading the posts of all the veteran collectors. I am starting a 1970 registry set, learning on the fly.

Thanks

Doug

Maybe this why it's taken such a ridiculously long time to receive my submissions. Still waiting from some 2/06 submissions.
  • That is interesting. They're grading about 100,000 cards per month! They must be very busy. It shows that the card market is strong.

I think 100,000 per month has been the target number for the last 4-6 years. So if anything, it is keeping steady during "down" times.

Question for the veterans of the board. Seems like has been considerable increase in 9's and 10's in some years, what is the prognosis for pricing of cards going forward. What % decrease does anyone expect in prices in the future if any?

    Thanks

  • PSA is doing very well at this point. I remember when PSA, SGC and GAI were all considered for submissions. I wonder what the breakdown is on the large number of submissions. The Set Registry has an amazing amount of sets with more coming. In order to get those cards on the Registry, you need to cross them in a lot of instances because rare cards are hard to find in any slab. Last, I sincerely believe PSA has upped its submissions by adopting a new policy of not really caring what grade the card is assigned. I know many people who have had to submit the same card a number of times to get the deserved grade. I think PSA is aware of resubmissions and counts on them for a certain percentage of cards graded each month. With the huge disparity in prices between PSA and other grading companies, it makes fiscal sense to give it an extra try.

As for PSA 9s and PSA 10s, I believe certain modern sets have had their floodgate opened. To reach the top five on the Registry, you'll need PSA 9.3 - 9.8 ratings. However, on older, scarcer sets, PSA is still protecting their bell curve regardless of card condition. Dealers are still given a grade bump and the rest of us have to eat it on low pop sets and cards. Take a look at 707s cards. He has scans up now. He has cards with recent serial numbers that are highly inflated. Check out his Goudey Ruths. They're atrocious. For each example we see of an overgraded card, know one of us is losing a grade on a card that deserves higher.

I have to say it must be nice to be in a business with completely subjective guidelines and no recourse. The Set Registry has brought PSA to a near monopoly level. We're at their mercy until another competitior emerges.

    JIMCo,

Thanks for the thoughts. I am a newbie, but I kind of have a problem with the resubmission of cards till it gets the grade level bump. It's to bad that the consistency is not where it needs to be. I would think an 8 is an 8 is an 8, but I guess not.

I would imagine this reeks havoc with the pop report. For the veterans again, how overstated are the pop reports?

    Thanks

    Inconsistency is part of grading.

All grading companies have this problem ...the rate is about the same.

PSA being the biggest in numbers simply has more choices to point at.

SGC has been grading now for a long time, they have their registry as well. you also have choices in GAI and BGS

Its not a monopoly, the market simply prefers PSA...wether they are the best grading co is open for debate but what its not open for debate is that MOST people choose PSA.

SGC and BGS have a loyal following and have developed nice niches in the collecting community.

I believe the jump in stock prices came from getting rid of the customer service department.....
