How much better is cable than DSL? Where will the speed be noticed the most, simply in downloading / uploading scans, or is it noticable in everyday "ebay" searches and the like.
Clearly Matt's naked men pictures will take longer to see (or will they), but I can live with that.
I just got back from my bro's house and he has a "cable" connection. He has the lower-tier cable he tells me, and my DSL is certainly faster. I'm told that higher-tier cable is faster.
have dsl at work cable at home .Cable is about 2x faster then dsl but with that said dsl is fast enough you really cant notice the differance unless your downloading a lot of pictures
I recently regressed from satellite to dial-up. Life is slooooow and no more smut. There is no such thing as DSL or Cable where I live. Can you hear the banjos playing?

For cable: the more people (in your neighborhood) uses it at the same time the slower it gets. I think it's bandwidth. I think cable upload is faster but some companies caps the line if there's too much upload.
As for DSL: it doesn't go by bandwidth so you don't share your speed with your neighbor. Your speed depends on your distance to their phone company's central office. This is not a regualr office. It's a place where the hardware and wirings houses. Also depends on the condition of the phone line. I have an old computer (PII 166 using windows 98) and my speed is better than my sisters cable and she uses P4 and window XP.
I'm thinking of switching to FiOs (fiber optic). I heard its sort of like cable but much better. Verizon FiOs go by bandwidth but they put less subscribers in a block (something like that... not a techie). Verizon FiOs drawback for me, they want you to convert your phone line to fiber optics. You actually don't need a phoneline to get FiOs service. You can request data only but have to watch those installers because I heard even you request data only they will disconect the copper and switch your phone to FiOs. Insist on data only. They just want you to switch so they don't have competition. Verizon still has sole control over FiOs. So once you convert to fiber optics you can't go back to copper. Also means if power goes out (and if it goes out often in your neighborhood... tough luck) so does your phone. It has back up battery for up to 8 hours. My neighbor said when power went out here for 11 hours due to fallen tree, backup started to beep after 4 hours and there's only outgoing no incoming. Unlike copper FiOs uses electricity to power your phone line.
You can actually use old PC like this as long as you don't upgrade the software that much. You'll get good speed. Also I've found out many still uses windows 98. If I don't need newer software version I don't upgrade.
If I switch to FiOs I need new PC. I think it requires faster PC and at least windows XP for the speed package I want to get.

But I have no clue what I'm talking about either.
