Split Grades

David,

How does PCGS grade coins that have obvious differences in obverse and reverse grades, usually in early US coins where there may be a worn, shattered, or sunken die used to strike one side of the coin, and a fresh die on the other. Also, some early varieties wear unevenly for many reasons.

Does PCGS grade an average for both sides, or grade no better than the worst side?

Thanks

In general, a coin is the grade of its worst side. There is a little leeway, and each coin is different, but that's the general concept.

    Thanks,

    David
