Is this coin possibly over graded?

I am looking to buy German gold, so I ran into this.

In MS66, I think this particular one is overpriced. I am not even sure if it deserved to be MS66. It has been struck not on target.

I am new to this hobby, so you guys tell me.

  • IMO that seller is also Ernie. At least both dealers sites look the same on Ebay and both are from the same place.

I bought a ZAR Pond from this dealer ( raw, in my very inexperienced days ) which I thought looked sensational. Looking back the coin has been dipped imo as the golden colour is just so different then the usual gold colour.

Anyhow to cut a long story short I will NEVER buy from that dealer again.

    Just my opinion.

I don't believe the coin is struck off-center; it's just sitting in the slab crooked. However, I'd be wary of the fingerprint on the obverse, which I believe is on the coin. Also I see spots on the reverse.

  • Well spotted Jester - I don't think that the seller alerts buyers about 'sore points' as much as he should.

The eBay sellers ebwcoin and ernie are one and the same. Ernie used to sell his lower priced coins using the ID ebwcoin and start everything off at 99 cents or less.

I've always been completely happy with the coins I have bought from Ernie and still kick myself for passing on a few in the past. Ernie uses a scanner instead of a camera for his auction photos so the coins I have bought have been better "in hand" than shown in his pictures.

However, you need to know the market of the coins you are buying from him as his prices are high and many appear to be overpriced given similar coins that are available in the market.

I thought an MS66 should not have any fingerprints. I guess MS69 is where we talk about flawless specimens.

Not all MS66 are alike, so I really do not want to spend my good money on this sore spotted coin.

Thanks for alerting me about this.

I want to buy raw coins because the price is better, but I will most likely get one that is in subpar condition and has been dipped.
