1941 Play Ball Crossover Opinions

I collect the 1941 Play Ball set in NM-MT condition. Last year I puchased a Left Gomez in GAI 8.5. The card measures correctly. Under 10x magnification the corners and edges look to be at least PSA 8 quality. The SMR for an 8 is $2,000. The SMR for a 9 is $6,500. I would like to have this card in PSA holder to go with my set. However, cracking it out makes me nervous. Would you crack it out and submit? Would you leave it in the holder and submit for a crossover? What do you think it will grade with PSA?

Thanks, David

Top left corner and lower back left corner look suspect . If you get the grader of death - 7. That is a tough call though. If it comes back a 7, I don't think you will be too happy. However, just resubmit until you get the 8. I don't feel at all that you will get the 9. chaz

Give it a try in the crossover route if you'd be happy with an 8. I think it's got a very solid shot. I don't think it's got a shot at a 9, at least not from the scan. There does appear to be a slight print-line about forehead level and the bottom right corner is touched. The top left looks ok to me. I think if you crack it, it make take a submission or two but I think it would end up in an 8 holder. Just my opinion though.
  • Don't waste the grading fee with crossover. I have had terrible luck with crossover service, but really good results cracking. If it has solid 8 corners as you say (hard to tell for sure from a scan) and a good surface, then it will end up in a PSA 8 holder.

  • Thank you for the responses. Some of the corners may look a little week, however, that is due to some toning. Up close they are strong. Probably not 9 quality, but 8 is likely. I think the most likely grade is an 8. The print mark on the bottom left border is common with this card. I have seen many 8s with it. It is like the smudge on the '78 Molitor. The print line at the top is there but not as noticable on the card itself. I think I will try a crossover with a minimum grade of 8. If it does not cross, then I will crack it out (or possible crossover to SGC and then to PSA). I will let you know what happens.

  • If you're close to a show, you could get it reviewed there as well. I wouldn't crack it until trying to cross it over... for all you know you could damage it to a 6 and then it'd be worth a lot less!

if you are very good at cracking, then crack it. If not, then just a do a crossover.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

For the money involved, i would rather wait for a show and show the card to PSA.

Looks right about a PSA 8...not a high grade one ...a straight 8
