Sarawak

Satin-like and eye appealing brown surfaces with a hint of red on both sides. Well struck. A few fine contact marks on the obverse bust and above ONE on the reverse. The only Cent of this type certified by PCGS, thus the finest coin of this type certified by PCGS. In 1838 James Brooke a British adventurer with an inheritance and an armed sloop arrived to find the Brunei Sultanate fending off rebellion from war like inland tribes. Brooke put down the rebellion and in reward was granted power over part of Sarawak. Appointing himself Rajah Brooke, he pacified the natives, suppressed head hunting, eliminated the much-feared Borneo pirates, and founded a dynasty that lasted until after WWII. The Brooke family of 'White Rajah's' continued to bring ever growing tracts of Borneo into their control throughout their rule.

I sold this Sarawak-related medal on eBay almost five years ago to the day:

This is a tribute medal struck to honor the founder of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in Sarawak, Malaysia.

    The obverse depicts The Honourable Dato'Ang Lai Soon, S.P.M.J., P.N.B.S., O. St.J.

His Excellency is shown wearing his ceremonial uniform, with epaulets, elaborate collar insignia, medals, and garter.

The reverse features his beautiful and powerful coat of arms, with two Oriental dragons wearing Maltese crosses; a crowned helmet; a shield; flourishes and garter; a rare bird; the motto "Justice Honour and Integrity"; and the legend "-Datuk-Ang-Lai-Soon-"

This presentation piece was struck in bronze, gilt, and measures an inch and three quarters in diameter.
