A nasty Conder token

Obverse: "1794 A MAP OF FRANCE" surrounding a square with "FIRE" in each corner, "FRA-NCE," "RELI/GION," "GLORY," "throne," and a foot on top of "HONOR."

Reverse: "MAY GREAT BRITIAN EVER REMAIN THE REVERSE."

Edge: "PAYABLE IN LONDON, BRSTOL, & LANCASTER"

Can anyone with a copy of Dalton and Hamer confirm that this is DH 1017-C?

    Nice Conder though.

It helps if you understand the politics of the time and the meanings of the various symbols. In 1789 the people of France rebeled. As the years passed society continued to break down and by 1794 The Terror was in full bloom. Even so there was some sympathy for the revolution. This token was meant to symbolize the problems in France (A map of France) The State divided (Fra-nce), the throne overturned (throne upside down), Religion broken up (RELI/GION), GLORY defaced (glory with lines through it), HONOR trampled underfoot, Fire in every corner, and danger on every side (the sides of the square are made up of daggers). It's a neat poliical propaganda token.
