Oops, I accidently opened a 1977 topps wax box

Back in February, I opened a 1977 topps baseball box. OOPS! I could have saved time by flushing $425 down the toilet. I love this set, but talk about tough cards! Nearly all of the bottoms were chipping. I would love to see some 9s and 10s in person. Is anyone actively building this set now, I'd love to hear about it.

  • Judging by the price you paid I assume it was 1977 Football. I've opened a few wax packs but nothing worth mentioning. I think I'm sticking to racks from now on!
  • It was a box of baseball

I opened a 1977 Vending box once. Same results as you. I only lost about $300 on it. Sometimes opening old stuff like that is like climbing a big mountain. It's fun to say that you did it once in your lifetime but something you probably won't do again.

I know that feeling only it happened to me with a 75 mini box.

  • I find that packs and boxes are more often to contain junk. Think about it, people buy the case open a few boxes the cards are bad so they pass some of the loss on someone else. If you opened a case of 77 vending and hit a gold mine with centered cards and great corners and were making more than the box was worth, would you sell it off?

who did you buy the box from? if it was on ebay and based on the price , I probably have some bad news for you.

The collective bad experiences of the folks on this thread is a prime example why unopened material that is more than 25 years old should remain unopened. It is bad karma to disturb something that has been left alone for that long.

    Scott,
I agree with packcollector, the price sounds too low. My '77 PSA set is 3rd on the All time list, I'm 60% or so along. Look for Magellan's 1977 Topps Baseball Set.

I checked out your registry page. Very, very, very cool. I think I am going to add this set to my list (I am also 1971 BB and 1975 BB). A couple of questions for you?

What is your absolute favorite card of the set?
What is the hardest card of the set?
How much do grade 8 and 9 commons run?
Do you have any grade 8 or 9 doubles?

    thanks,
    Scott

    Scott,

There are dozens of cards I really really like in this set but the Fisk, Darrell Evans purple letter, & Brett RB probably top the list most days.
Going strictly by pop reports Luebber #457 is the toughest card but a hi grade Sutter has gotten really expensive since he made the HOF, a couple tough cards in 9 or higher are Munson & Candelaria. Sometimes the Pop reports don't tell all as people are going to submit the borderline stars and not the borderline commons such as Luebber.
Easy PSA 8 commons $3-5; easy PSA 9 commons $4-8. I don't like to give you such a broad range but if I state 1 dollar figure there would be so many exceptions to that number you'd think I was full of crap. I may be anyway. image

  • OK. I just started a new registry for 1977 topps baseball. It was the first year that I collected baseball cards at the age of 5. I have decided to give up on the 1975 topps set. The 77s appear to be more of a challenge, which I think will end up being funner for me. Also, the 77s have some better action shots than the 75s. The 75s just don't have the action photos that I like. I agree with dave, the '77 Fisk card is awesome, very similar to the '71 Munson. I am going to have to try to get that Fisk in a 10. I will still be assembling the 71 registry set as well. Any help with the 77s would be greatly appreciated.

OK, so I am at 17% now. This set is crazy as far as condition goes. PSA is all over the map. I am starting to think with enough patience and enough circulating of cards, one could put a PSA 8 set together that would be nearly identical to a PSA 9 set for a fraction of the cost. I just got in a PSA 8 Roy White tonight. This card is really a Mint 9. Bright white card stock, Almost no chipping underneath magnification, sharp corners, no meaningful printing flaws. Better than many of the 9s I have and it rivals my only 10. I have bought several of the stars this past month in PSA 9. Most of them really are not 9s. hardly any are better than the newly arrived Roy White.

Instead of buying the rest of the stars in 9, I think I will buy doubles or triples of each star in 8 and simply choose the best one and resell the dupes. I will save a lot of money, plus in many cases I may end up with a better card than what is in a 9 holder.

Well if you ever want any info on the '77 set talk to downgoesfrazier from these boards. He is the man when it comes to this set. If it was me I would want 9's but 8's can be had for next to nothing and you could put together a nice set for a decent price.

Typically, 77 wax boxes go for around $800 - if they are legit. I know, I have ripped a few myself.

Scott, I was looking at your set this weekend......very fast start ! I can't disagree with your strategy of buying multiple 8's & choosing the best for your own sense of satisfaction. We can get caught up in these registry ratings sometimes to the detriment of our sets.

I busted a pristine 78 baseball rack case last year. Unbelievable condition. Good quality stuff is out there. You must pick and choose wisely..... and then hope to get lucky!
