But, the icing on the cake came from a tiny SGC submission

1984 Topps Mattingly - SGC 98 - 1 of 1, highest graded of over 560 submitted
1965 Bazooka Bunning Panel - SGC 98
1967 Topps Punch-Out Hank Aaron SGC 80

Mattingly will be up on eBay shortly... any guesses as to what something like that would go for?

  • Unfortunately, I dont think the mattingly will go for much more of a premium than a PSA 10. I had a 1987 Topps Barry Bonds SGC 98, which I believe was a one of two at the time, sell for about $15 less than a PSA 10. I'm not sure how many hardcore SGC collectors there are, so my guess would be somewhere between $110-140.
  • Nice job on the grades. Out of curiosity, did you use SGC on the Bazooka panel because it was cut too close for comfort? I have found them to be a bit more leaniant on the lines showing on the panels, and with the others graded by PSA, just thought it was an odd choice to make. May be way off base, but just curious.....

Actually, I used SGC because it was a panel I had picked up since I had sent the other order to PSA. This panel is actually cut way outside the dashes. I was not aware they were more lenient on the dashes, but I think that's crap. I noticed some pretty questionable cuts in their holders in the current Mastro auction lot for the 59 Bazooka partial set. The pictures aren't very good, so until you mentioned it, I was giving them the benefit of the doubt that the dashes were on each edge. As far as I'm concerned, if the dashes aren't evident along the majority of each edge, it should not garner a numerical grade.

This is the first time I've used SGC, I did it because I needed a couple 1950's cards done quickly (they belong to a client from his childhood collection) and as cheap as possible by a legit company, and I had been wanting to get the 67 Punch out Aaron in an SGC holder since they have graded the majority of those - and PSA will only take cards of the same size in a single order, so I elected to go this route.
  • One thing I've learned is to never underestimate the voraciousness of Mattingly collectors. Try picking up a PSA 10 1984 Donruss for the SMR price (not possible). Even PSA 9 1984 Donruss Mattingly cards are selling for more than the SMR price. I would bet if you post that Mattingly and include a subtitle denoting that it is the highest graded SGC card, you will get big bucks for it. Maybe $250 to $350.
