Know anything about the Sika of Ghana?

My 31st edition of the Standard Catalog has listings for recent commemorative coins of Ghana denominated in Sika. But, Ghana's official currency is still the Cedi. I've searched the internet, but found nothing about the Sika. Anyone know what it is or its relation to the Cedi?

I can't see anything of the sort in the 33rd Krause - they may have decided they were "unofficial" and shuffled them off into the "Unusual" catalogue. I understand that Ghana has a few "monarchs" - remnants of the old pre-colonial tribal system with ceremonial powers only - maybe your mystery coins were "authorised" by one of those. Curiously, the "sika" is still listed in the Denomination Index.

What KM number are they given?

  • There are nearly 2 dozen sika denominated coins listed in the 4th edition of the Unusual World Coins text. There is no explanation there either though.

In the 31st edition they are given KM#s 37-41. That's interesting if they've been moved to the Unusual World Coins book. Maybe Sapyx has it right.

A search on "sika" in eBay Coins turned up some half a dozen of them for sale. From the pics I've seen, some of them look similar to the Palau coins (similar themes, colourization, etc.). Maybe the mint that made the Palau coins is just diversifying... or maybe it's just a copycat mint. Either way, the Ghanians (or someone else in the know) must have complained that they never authorised them.
