1983 Donruss Don Mattingly? No way, but what is it?

My first venture into the world of card collecting was back in the 1988, when in the 6th I bought a "Baseball Card Collecting Kit" at my school's bookfair. It contained about 20 1987 Topps commons, a "price guide", a poster version of 60 1988 cards (all star players), and a few binder pages. I always kinda liked the poster for some reason, and found one on Ebay recently and picked it up for a quarter, since I had lost mine years ago. Anyways, when the poster is folded up, you get the cover for the "Baseball Card Collecting Kit." I was checking out the cards depicted on the cover, and noticed a Don Mattingly card in the upper right corner that doesn't exist. It's made to look like a 1983 Donruss card.

Since there is no Rated Rookie cards in the 1983 Donruss set, and no Mattingly cards from the major manufacturers in that year, is this just some kind of joke, or was there a fake card like this avaliable on the market?

I know that with 1987 Donruss, a card that wasn't printed was featured on wax boxes. Could this be the same case?

If memory serves me correct, it was a card made by Baseball Cards Magazine and put into one of their monthly issues. They did several neat cards.

    FYS is right.
It is from Baseball Cards Magazine. I still have almost every issue with the cards still in them.

Is this worth anything? I am a big fan, but have never known it existed. It must be so rare that the market has not put a consistent price on it yet. What is the SMR?

It wasn't a real card. It was a thin cardboard sheet insert that you had to cut out then cut to proper size. It's unlicensed as well (since it wasn't a real card per se), and isn't graded by anyone (well, GAI may give it a shot...).

The 2001 Donruss Originals set had a 1982 version Rated Rookie of Don Mattingly that was pretty cool looking.
Just glad to be here with everyone.
