Are you organized?? How??

Are you collector's as unorganized as I am?? I was trying to search for some cards for a fellow member today and became disgusted with myself on my lack of organization. I'd need to take a week vacation to find some of the cards I know I have but don't know where. I have got to get better and start soon. Heck, looking through my old stuff would probably curb my pack ripping crave for some time.

For those of you who are or think you are organized, how do you do it??? Monster boxes?? Do you sort by player, year, set, etc.??

I think I could use your advice.

sets are in boxes on 3 level storage area.

vintage sets are in toploaders boxes or MJroop boxes.

    Commons are in 3200ct trays

under 150ct sets are in ultra pro plastic boxes

    that about does it.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

I've been talking about organization for over a year!

    And I'm lost!

I've got a lot of the stuff out of the closet and now need to open and repack/inventory the cartons.

I guess it depends on how much someone has?

I don't even know how many cards I own?

  • I have about 30 Super Monster boxes. I, too, have no idea where to begin. Do I start by sport? It would take at least a month of intense organization.

    No idea what I have.

Pack-ripping craze has gripped me, also, within the past year or so.

You're not alone, big fella. If you find some quality advice, please, pass it along!

With over 200,000 cards, I think I am fairly well organized. I have all my cards for my personal collections sorted by player or set (based on the type of collection), and have all the rest sorted by boxes (mostly the 3 row monster boxes). I then have lists of each individual card (for my personal collections) on paper and in my computer. For the rest, I have lists of what set I have cards for, and the list lets me know in what box they are kept.
It took a while to organize all of them, but it was fun and worth the effort.

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

All my T206's and registry sets are in Roop boxes. All sets are in 200 to 500 count boxes turned outward with the year and set mark on it so you can see it. All moster boxes are #'ed and a MAster checklist is in a folder next to them. All binders are labeled out ward so you can see whats in them. Every time I buy something new it is cataloged and put in the master sheet. All my important cards are on checklist stored on my hard drive and now backed up on a disc. Simple and easy. I know where everything is and can go to immediately. But, organization is my only strong point, women are my weakness. Joe

I enter everything into one of JEB's spreadsheets and then photograph each slab. The photos going onto a disk for viewing, and the cards either go to the safety deposit box or on a shelf.

Edited to say I used to be pretty unorganized, but after buying a card I already had a few times I got caught up!

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

I tried to get organized a few years ago with some computer program I bought. I made it about 1/2 way through my Glen Robinson (yes, that Glen Robinson) collection when I realized it would take me a good 500+ hours to do it. I need some kids!

I was once organized. I had everything nicely sorted in one closet in my office. Then our baby came and all hell broke loose. The office became a nursery, so I have cards in three different closets, under two beds, and in the attic. And the worst part is my wife made me limit my spending!!!!!

I think (near) complete lack of organization comes with the hobby! For what I do have organized, I prefer the ultra-pro slider boxes for ALL of my bulk stuff... monter/shoe boxes for those slider boxes... top loaders for mid-range stuff... single-screw ultra-pro holders for the good stuff... and mj roop boxes for all my graded stuff.
I've got quite an extensive graded collection, so far I've managed to keep a nice excel spreadsheet of everything I've got. I've also managed to get scans of most of it too; sometimes it helps to SEE the card to know if I have it or not.

My hobby room (much like most I've seen) looks like an explosion of sports cards.

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

I did some major organizing last year, and was able to get rid of about 50,000 of those pesky late 80s - early 90s commons. I bought 60 of the 800 count boxes, and just sorted tons of commons by team. I filled up two 800 count boxes per team, then sold them as team boxes for $10 - $25 each. No one would just buy a ton of commons from those years, but broken out by team, they were easy to unload. (All except for one Angels box that I know is still kicking around.) Took a while to do all the sorting, but rainy days are better spent in that way than at the mall in a shoe store...

But all in all, it was a very successful way to get organized, unload some junk, and make a few bucks!

I feel your pain! My wife is the same way with the limit. I too have cards in multiple boxes, but they are all in one room just sitting there with no time to sort through them!.......POOR CARDS!!!!

  • I have one question for some orginization. Is there a certain box that will house PSA slabbed cards? If so can I pick one up at a local card shop or do I have to search the Internet?

The vault boxes or super vault boxes hold graded cards nicely, I just put several hundred slabs in them and so far I love'em, I have them stacked on topp of one another with the year, in sharpie on the end of the box.

RyanFan34... Yes, you should. Most of the (better) shops should carry lots of supplies, including these Vault Boxes. The single row boxes will house approx. 60-70 graded singles, and run a mean $2.50-$3.50 each. I'm sure if you needing a few of these, you might be able to get them cheaper yet!
