Penny Sleeves--how come so few big sellers use them?

Well, I've pretty much given up on buying cards raw on Ebay. Yet another group of raw cards came in today and no penny sleeves. I have a list now of big sellers (feedback 6000+) that have shipped me cards in just top loaders and the cards come in dinged or creased. What is with the lack of penny sleeves? I know it doesn't cost that much for a case of them. Is it that I buy cheaper commons first and the sellers can't be bothered showing some care with their packaging? Or am I making a big deal out of nothing?
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

It drives me crazy also. I can't tell you how many cards I've bought that were put into the top loader w/o a penny sleeve and the cards were dinged or worse. Then again, I've had people ship me cards loose in an envelope before - no penny sleeve or top loader!!

I never use them. I use card saver 1's and I have nicked more corners on penny sleeves then could possibly have been damaged inside the CS1.

I agree 100% for my personnel storage. I do however send in a penny sleeve inside a top loader with tape on the top of toploader.

YOU ARE NOT MAKING A BIG DEAL! This is a Serious problem and prevents me from bidding on items until I can ask the mundane question of how it is shipped.

Keep in mind some sellers do not know how to use penny sleeves without damaging the card. We went over this lesson many times and still there are too many sellers and collectors out there not using the penny sleeves safely.

Card saver 1s are a good way to go. Card Saver IIs are very good too, but some people can miss on those too.

Shipping cards in an envelope without protection is just plain ignorant.

  • What sucks even worse, is when they put a card in an envelope with no protection, then fill the envelope out. I had to get a refund, because the card I received (Brett Hull Topps rookie, paid just under $4 though), had my address indented on the face of the card!!! What hurts even more about it, is that it actually made it to me in really good condition, and if it was gradeable (without the indentions), was at least a 9!!! I did get my money back with no problems though, and there were no hard feelings, because it was addressed from a woman, and I still think, most women do not realise the complexity of their mistakes. Not to bash women, mainly our grandmas, but if they let our dads keep their cards, think most of us would feel more content!!!
  • I prefer my cards to be shipped sleeved and top loaded. I do however agree that many times trying to place a card in the sleeve itself can cause damage, especially to black bordered and holofoil cards.

Very good - so here's the question. How many of you, who ship cards as described above, turn the penny sleeve upside down so that the open portion faces the bottom of the toploader? I can't tell you how many cards I've received damaged by the card moving around and sticking to tape.

Mark- That's exactly how I ship. That way the card doesn't work up in the sleeve and contact the tape.

  • I have found that by cutting the penny sleeve about an inch on one side you can slip the card in without damaging the card.

I just bought a raw Ted Williams on Ebay that arrived in a top loader without a sleeve. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
