1857 Liberty head type 1 $1 coin ?

Listed on ebay this week was a $1 1857 coin that was dark colored, chocolate brown, but appeared to be possibly gold in the small worn areas. My problem is that , assuming it actually is a gold 1857, why does it have a type 1 1849-1854 obverse and reverse. The rev. appears to be a closed wreath with the number 1 above the word dollar and the date 1857 inside the wreath. Does anyone have any info on such a coin? The coin does have United States of America on the reverse around the outter edge which is reeded. I bought the thing just for the heck of it, and now I need some info as to wether it is a genuine U.S. coin or geniune crap

Got a pic? Gold dollars are heavily counterfeited. Sounds like this may be one.

Well, it's obviously not a genuine coin, unless either the date was wrong in the auction or the coin's date was altered for some reason.

It might be a contemporary counterfeit, which, with the wrong date, would make it desirable to the folks who collect contemporary counterfeits.

If, on the other hand, it's a 'modern' fantasy piece, then it would only have bullion value (assuming it has any gold in it).

    Why did you buy it?

  • If someone will tell me how to post the link I will. As far as why I bought it, basically I wanted to see it in person and the price was not too bad. I got it for $2 less than my max. curiosity bid.
  • just give us the URL and somebody will link it

  • Yeah I sent in the payment. I figured I've spent more on worse in my life. Probably a good thing I don't get too curious very often.
  • And you paid how much ?

  • I am not expecting to get a good deal here, I figured it is a fake or possibly an old counterfiet copper that had been plated which would be a pleasant surprise if for no other reason than a conversation piece.

The one in hand looks like a half eagle. He is showing the wrong pic.

  • Perry,

the 1 in hand may be a 1/4 eagle (whizzed POS)

still a very misleading ad !

100proof1957---Actually it looks like an eagle. Its diameter is about 1 1/2 times the width of his middle finger so its about the right size for an eagle. I agree with your observation that it is whizzed, polished, or harshly cleaned in some fashion.
