Considering selling a registry set to supplement...

...a new series that I am interested in. My registry sets are 'Modern Crap', but top 10 'Modern Crap'. Not sure if I should dump my SBA or Kennedy w/Varieties....any suggestions? I really dont want to overextend, be all over the map...after reading all your great advice here, I really want to 'thin the herd' and focus on one or two sets....REALLY REALLY loving Barber material now...

Barber material is a real good choice. Dump any modern crap unless it is in your denom. like Roosies are to me. You'l never go wrong buying key date classic coins.

Been there, done that. I was sinking way too much money in modern proof stuff (State Quarters, Sacs, SBA's, etc.) to keep myself busy in between finding/upgrading lincolns for my sets. Finally, I decided that I needed to stay focused on my lincolns and just sold off three very nice registry sets. It's not hard to get distracted and to pursue other coins...because there are so many cool coins out there. It's all about self-discipline for me now. Focus on Lincolns and spend money on only lincolns...that is my mentality!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I like what you say Ellewood, and not just because its about Lincolns.

    Toby & Bob,
I started collecting back in 1983 and determined, early on, that with the resources I had available for the hobby, I needed to specialize in one denomination if I was to acquire a quality complete set. My choice was Lincoln cents because of its combination of many rare coins, many very inexpensive coins, many error coins and many proof coins. All the coins had the date and mintmarks on the obverse which made for easy display and visual completeness. Now, after 23 years, I enjoy the collection and the PCGS registry which lets me upgrade where needed and slowly slab my business strikes. Although many people enjoy the collecting of different types, I have found my enjoyment in collecting and reading and learning more about the Lincoln cent. The one hundredth anniversary year should be even more fun. Steveimage
  • Ellewood...why do I feel as though those words should have come out of MY mouth a few years ago...few years back, I had a nice 63/64 Morgan Registry set, almost complete Peace dollar set 64/65-including the '21, '28...lacking only the '24-S & 34-S...both of which (all NGC/PCGS and nice coins for the grade) I sold and jumped right into SBA's and Kennedy's (not knocking anyone that enjoys these series)...I agree with you Watersport...it is GREAT advice...the only set I was considering keeping was my '59-present Lincoln set and dumping the rest....

Dimeman...YESSIR, Barbers are WAY cool and I have a special liking for those Barber dimes...image

I would modify that to "Dump ALL modern crap unless it is in your denom."

Yeah, dump that modern crap. I sure wish I'd have done that a year ago when my coins were worth about 40% less than they are now.

  • I agree...man is it easy to become too diversified, and lose focus...I'm settling down w/SLQ's and concentrate my coin dollars to that series...scr

Find your niche; collect what your happy with. It sounds like you've lost interest in SBA's and Kennedy's so do whats right for you.

Also PM sent about your SBA's

They are modern coins not modern crap
  • Russ and TAClough....its not that I personally consider my SBA's and Kennedy's 'Modern Crap' (surprised DRG didnt reply to this thread also)...I have had alot of enjoyment collecting these and to get to positions I have in each registry ranking, well, honestly, it has made me appreciate being a collector...I can only imagine what collectors that are going for, say Stella's, Double Eagles, Busties, go through...I admire them as there is less material in THOSE sets as their are in my SBA's and Kennedy's. All I am getting at is that I feel I must move on to other series...plain and simple...not because they are 'moderns' specifically. And you are CORRECT Garsmith, they are modern COINS...I was merely using the 'term' that has come to be loved/hated here...I dont think ANY of my coins are crap....if I did, I wouldnt collect them.

For those of you who have expressed interest in what I have, and may/will eventually sell, I have sent PM's. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts...thats what I wanted.

I guess, with the exception of a few, that at some point we all develop a taste for something new/different, and thats where I am at this point, though I havent lost the appreciation of these two particular sets...look at the SBA's...nice high grade stuff is few and far between...likewise the Kennedys...these just arent coming up much for upgrades, and its not that I am bailing out because I cant upgrade...heck, being in the top 10 in both is EXTREMELY satisfying, and again, has been difficult to reach that point.

Perhaps 'dumping' was the wrong choice of words, but........you all know what I mean...you all have been there...thanx again!
  • imageEveryone forgets that everything was " Modern Crap " at some point.
The way to judge how a series will perform as a collectible, and as investment, is challenge !!
Mountain climbers pay $ 70,000.00 to climb MT. Everest, but they won't waste their time scaling other mountains, even when it's FREE !!!
Moderns are a GREAT opportunity for the AVERAGE collector to " get in on the ground floor ", for a fraction of what some of these series will be selling for in a few years.
Ike dollars, Kennedy Halves, and others offer TREMENDOUS challanges, and will be worth many multiples of their selling price a few years down the road.
Futhermore, I buy ONLY " KEYS, AND SEMI- KEYS " from the traditional, or classic series, and collect "Moderns" as a complete series.
I have NEVER lost money following this policy. However, I would not recommend collecting a classic series for investment. As a series, they have little room to increase in price, unless in top- pop condition. When the average collector can no longer afford to buy at these levels, the average grade material stops climbing in price, because there are no buyers.
The top- pop material will continue to escelate, because buyers with " deep pockets " will purchase only the best, as do all collecters.
So, I would recommend, and buy CLASSIS series, ONLY in the TOP grades !!!
