How long should you wait when filing a non-paying bidder?

How long should you wait when filing a non-paying bidder? I have had experiences where people win auctions and never reply to e-mails.
If this happens i usually file a nonpaying bidder on the 8th day after auction ended.
Do you think this is to short of a time? Just wondering how long other sellers wait. Remember this is without any communication at al with the buyer.

  • Since so many buyers never check out and pay with Money Orders, I always wait 14 days and 21 for Canadian buyers. One day past those standards I "nonpay" all that have not responded to my emails.

  • Two weeks is my max. That way all of the excuses have already spoken for themselves (vacation, sickness, business trip, etc). If the guy has super low feedback, 3 day friendly email reminder, 10 days Ebay reminder, 2 weeks NPB. If the guy (any feedback at all from 10 to 10,000) at least communicates with me each time with an excuse (good or bad), I'll go 30 days.......

14 days usually, but if the buyer at least communicates with you, it's not that big a deal to wait. The buyers that never communicate are the problem.

  • i agree with baseballfanatic and ctsoxfan.
  • I don't think you are out of line at all doing the non-paying bidder thing 8 days in if he hasn't communicated at all with you. I do a lot of auctions every week so it's tough to keep track of this stuff if you let it wait for a couple weeks. If I haven't heard a word from them by the following week, i usually get the non-paying bidder alerts going. It pushed them to at least communicate or pay if they are going to. I also wouldn't have a problem closing the non-paying bidder thing three weeks after the auction and re-listing the item.

If I haven't received any communication from the buyer within 7 days, I send out a reminder invoice and an email informing them that if I don't hear back from them in the next few days, I will file a NPB dispute. On day 10, I open the dispute and 9 out of 10 times, the buyer pays soon thereafter.

I wait at least two weeks. It amazes me but a lot of people never respond to email and then 12-14 days later a check shows up in my mailbox. Strange to a lot of us who pay right away with Paypal but not everybody is as quick to pay.
  • southsider: i always used to do this, but found i rarely got a response from the second invoice, but when i sent out the non paying bidder alert, it worked probably 8 or 9 out of 10 times....so i removed the second invoice step and decided to just hit them with the npb alert right away. it gets their attention and you know in a day or two if they are ever going to pay.

I have a situation right now and tomorrow I'm filing a NPB alert, which will be the 15th day.
