BK panel size issue. Help please

I recently submitted a 1987 Burger King Ryne Sandberg panel. PSA sent it back stating it was too small for holder. On the oppsite side of the orginal panel is Mike Schmidt. There are several graded 1987 BK Mike Schmidts in registry. Any idea why they would turn this down? Has size requirements changed?

I think they only graded the individual cards cut from the panel and the not the unopened panel.
I collect PSA cards of the following:
    Billy Ripken
    Cal Ripken, Jr. 1980-2002
    Cal Ripken, Sr.
    Hall of Fame Rookies

PSA very rarely grades any panel type cards for me that are unopened, although they have a few times with 1988 MSA series discs.

They do grade individual cards [like Mike Schmidt]

They do grade the opened panels sometimes [e.g. if you opened it up]

And PSA is very, very inconsistent with grading esoteric/oddball issues. Many times I have to submit 2,3 or 5+ times to get it in a holder. At least you get a grading voucher.

Shrug - I've struggled with this for over 6 years. It will not change.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

It will not change, try getting a box bottom in a holder. I just don't understand why those microscopic black lines have to be on the box bottom cards ?

I promise you that they are not consistent on that, either.

  • I am not familiar with panel card grading but reading the description on the flip, it doesn't sound like it is too small for the holder. It sounds like the Sandberg card was cut smaller than their minimum required size for those cards. In other words, whoever cut the panel cut too much of the card for PSA to grade it. That's the way I read it but I may be wrong. image

  • BTW, Ryno is one of the nicest players I've ever met. He and his wife were on the same flight from Phoenix, sometime after he retired the first time. I went to the airport book store and all I could find was a baseball weekly that didn't have anything about him on it. We chatted for a little bit and I asked him to sign it for a friend of mine who is a huge cubs fan (I like the Sox) and he was gracious enough to oblige. I thought it was nice of him and I've been a fan ever since. image
