Griffey Jr. moving up the all time list today!!!

BigRedMachineBigRedMachine Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭
Passed Mickey Mantle on the career homerun list today, and at the same time passed Joe Dimaggio on the career RBI list.

Not bad for a guy who can't stay healthy and is still only 36.

Anyone think he can put together 2 or 3 good years, i.e. 35-40 HRs, 120 RBI's??

Probably not, but if he did, he's be way up on the lists by the time he's 40. His health has been a shame.

Good for Griff, its a shame that he caught the injury bug so bad the past few seasons, I hope he can put together a few injury-free seasons but I would not bet on it.

He is one of the finest ballplayers of this generation.

No steroid cloud, hard player (too hard some say, led to many injuries crashing into the wall in Seattle) and always a class act. Plays the game hard, has a smile on his face, and took less money to go play close to home.

I really hope he can stay healthy and play for 4-5 more years. He deserves more of a place in baseball history than he will probably get - especially, as Ax mentioned, in this era of steroid-using and greedy baseball players.

  • Congrats Griffey! Hey, if he stays relatively healthy like he did last year and has the longeivity of his father, 600 Home Runs is within easy reach.
  • I wish he would have stayed in Seattle, you gotta wonder what his stats would be like if that happened. I hope he plays another 5 years, healthy!

Safeco is much more of a pitcher's park than the Kingdome was...and I am sure that had a bit to do with Griffey leaving Seattle for the Reds.

Nonetheless, he's had a fabulous career, and would love to see him get to 600.

The man is a clean baseball Icon. His only setbacks have been due to injury. In my view, he is the player of modern times that all should be compared with, versus Bonds. Regards.

Hey, just watching the highlight of yesterdays home run again.

Noticed Griffey was wearing number 3 instead of the usual number 30.

Anyone know why the change or the significance of it??

This is all I could find via Google:

"Ken Griffey Jr. mentioned late in the season that he was planning to change his uniform number for 2006, but he swore us to secrecy about it. Now, it can be told. Beginning next spring, Junior will wear No. 3 on his back. All three of his kids wear 3 in the various sports they play, so it's sort of a backwards tribute to them."
