silver 1/4 reale experts--- need help!

I am trying to help a friend identify a Spanish era 1/4 reale. It's in XF condition with small hole, but clearly has no date, no mintmark. On one side is a lion, a castle on the other. Looking through an old 1750-modern Krause, these should all have dates. Anybody have any thoughts on this piece?? I did see someone on ebay selling a similar one, and he put down the date as a Bolivian 1/4r 1794/95--- yet from what I see in Krause, these weren't made until 1796, and again, are supposed to have dates. I'm confused

Are you sure it's from the 1700's? Could it be earlier? Maybe a denier from Castille and Leon from the medieval period?

Any chance of a pic or a link to the similar coin.

  • No, it's definitely the 1796-1816 type 1/4 reale. Maybe it's a super rare type. Don't have the coin with me to scan
  • Try Philippines KM#4
  • That was it! Phillipines 1788-90 according to Krause (though there's a note in my old edition that says there is still some question), but the plate shown is my coin! It never would have occured to me to look under the Phillipines! Much thanks!
