Circumvention of Ebay fees

I guess I really didn't know this is a violation.....but apparently the 'pick em' auctions that I like to do so much with large lots are against ebay rules!?!? However I see them on there all the time. Apparently I am get reported?

What is a "pick 'em" auction?

Basically something like "2006 TOPPS HERITAGE SP LOT, PICK ANY 15 FROM LIST" would be an example. I feel it is a great way to help someone complete a set. Apparently ebay does not?

  • How are those types of auctions against Ebay rules? They've got nothing to do with circumvention of fees.

they are against ebay rules - even if you are selling shoes you can't say pick a color or style. the 'complete your set' pick any 10 cards aren't suppose to be allowed but they are there all the time.

Ya, they say you can't. I was on there doing it for 4 months though and then all of a sudden I get my auctions ended. Did somebody rat me out?

I believe it falls under Choice Listings

<< <i>Choice listings can create a poor buying experience, outside-of-eBay transactions and the potential for fee circumvention >>

The fear for eBay is the outside-of-eBay transaction which means they don't get any money.

    And yes, someone reported you.

One way I've dealt with this is to list a group of cards with price for the whole group, but explain in the auction description that you will take offers on both the whole group as well as parts of the group. The key is to get those making offers to be explicit in what they are expecting.
  • ebay wants your money.

I got reported 2 or 3 times. ebay cancels it and return insertion fees. Now I think feebay don't return insertion fees anymore.

    TZAHL, yeah you got reported.

I find it kind of ridiculous that somebody would report me. Is it really hurting anyone??

Not saying it is 'legal' by ebay standards, but who would go to the trouble of pissing me off?? So I guess if it was somebody on here.....what the heck?? ( I dont' think it was)

Doubt it was anyone on here. Probably someone else that runs the same type of auction reported you.

It's the same lame excuse they used on why they made it if you accept paypal that you have to accept all forms. They claimed it was too confusing for the buyer when the seller stated that they do not accept Credit Cards.

I have been a big supporter of the ebay system despite its many flaws for quite sometime.

However, I will never undertand how ebay will allow this garbage but will not allow choice auctions for sports cards.

It's OK to show a million pictures of high $ cards, of which the buyer will receive none, but to list 50 cards and allow the buyer to pick any 10, that's too confusing and creates a poor buying experience.

I had similar auctions canceled in 2001 while selling Heritage SP "pick 10" lots. The ironic thing about it is that in the long run, everyone wins: the buyer gets the cards he/she needs, the seller generally makes more $ than selling a "non-choice" lot outright, and more money for the seller means more money for ebay.

As a buyer and a seller, I wish these auctions were allowed.
  • It's ridiculous. The only thing that I can see that would upset Ebay are the auctions that state in their description that they will sell additional cards for whatever amount. That's what I thought was labeled under the illegal choice auctions.

That's what I thought when feebay cancelled my auctions. I read somewhere they will no longer return the insertion fees of those auction.

  • Can you get around the "choice rule" (and yes I have been hand slapped on it over the years) if you say something along the lines of

    1961 Topps Mystery Lot
you will receive 20 cards at random from the following list. Please feel free to make suggestions"

I suppose if I said lot of 5 cards and then listed all cards available without saying 'choose' or 'pick' or whatever? That might get me around that but it would be MORE confusing for the buyer I would think. Guess I'll just have to trade! Sorry EBAY.
