Why is this Vending Box Slabbed?

I thought that GAI would only authenticate a vending box as "unopened" if they pulled it from a sealed case? This 68/69 Topps vending box has "Hockey" written in pen on the lid. This would mean that GAI opened the sealed case, wrote "Hockey" on the lid and then encapsulated?!?!?! Hmmm...

  • GAI has been slabbing alot of vending boxes lately, I don't really care about the box, they should do wrappers, Thats more interesting.

Mastro calls it "Unopened". I don't think GAI labeled it as such on the flip.

I think it was on the theory that all the stuff from Fritsch is good...
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

So is it bumped down to a 7.5 because the box has been written on it with the word "Hockey"? If it was a card I am sure it would be down graded heavily if it was written on.

And that theory would be sound! Larry and Pork Chop know their busness as well as anyone ever in this business/hobby.

that is what Mark M wrote in his book of how he thought it should be. Obviously not what GAI thought and put into practice as waiting for cases would cause them to turn away submissions.
