Barry Bonds 1987 Donruss Opening Day Error (edit - Grade In!)

I just bought a collection. In it was a 1987 Donruss Opening Day Barry Bonds Error w/ Johnny Ray on the front. Since I have no use for it, I need some help. What would y'all do?

Sell now raw?

Send to PSA for the $13 special hoping for a 9, then sell?

Send to PSA and try to time it for #715?

Sell raw and wait for #715?

I believe it has a great shot at a 9 with near perfect centering and nice corners.

Also, does anybody have any idea how many are out there? I couldn't find any on Ebay in completed or current auctions.

Your assistence would be appreicated. Thanks.

Shane

It's an error, so therefor its worthless. Package that useless card up and send it to me, ASAP! image

J/K, if you really do not want it and think it will grade high, why not give it a try and see if you can make some money back. As for when to sell, it's hard to say. I'm kind of interested in seeing how the market reacts when/if he passes the Babe.

I forgot to ask - any guesses on what it will go for on eBay?

    PSA 9?

    PSA 8?

    PSA pop report shows (37) PSA8, (22) PSA9, (2) PSA10
  • I would put a 9 in the $500-$800 range. I'd be interested in it.

    bsfastball,

Here is a scan of the card. Are you interested in it raw, or after grading?

  • Get that puppy graded and put it on the 'bay. Looks like you have a decent shot at a 9.

Did the seller of the collection know what it was? Get it BGS graded and sell.....
  • frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,129 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yes, he did know what it was, but he didn't have any idea what it was worth (nor did I). He said he it had been a long time since he looked it up.

    No BGS though.

I think BGS on that card would get you more money.

Looks like a strong 8 with an outside shot at a 9. Either way, I would slab and sell for sure.

  • I second the BGS recommendation... after 1981 or so BGS cards tend to sell for quite a bit more than a PSA card in the same grade. Whether or not this SHOULD be happening is another subject altogether image but it is what it is image

  • slab it and 'bay it. the $13 5 day turnaround would be well worth it.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Get it graded by PRO and put a "buy it now" for 1000.00

Would that be bad advice???? image

Seriously, get the bad boy graded by PSA and sell now! I wouldnt risk any further steroid scandal to lose on!

  • i go with grade it and sell it. send 5 day $13 then wait till hes near 715 and list i would put on for a wekk or 5 days once he got to 712 or 713 depending on the rate he hits them this year he swung decent yesterday even though he was 1/4.

That is actually the way I am leaning. I just sent it off today.

    Shane

  • Please keep us updated with what it grades and when you list it. I for one am curious how this one works out for you. SMR for a 9 is $900, but I think that is low considering how tough that card is to find.

I will. I sent it to PSA for the 5 day special. Hopefully, I will get my grade next week.

Allen's right, for better or worse.
  • Well, if it comes back an 8.5, it certainly wont be worth more there. I think PSA is the better bet here, cause that doesnt look like an 8.
  • AllenAllen Posts: 7,165 ✭✭✭
If it comes back an 8.5 you crack and go to PSA and your out $20. If it comes back a BGS 9 then you have increased the hammer price substantually.

This ain't mine, but this will give us an idea on how much one would bring.

Yeah, I think it was fairly graded to me. It looked like a PSA 7 - 8.

I didn't get it off of Ebay. I bought it locally, and sent it to PSA just a couple of weeks ago.

Either your link isn't working, or your auction was ended by eBay.

I know. I just got home from church, and noticed that Ebay had removed it because of "keyword spamming". In other words, because I was advertising other auctions in my description. I did not know that you couldn't do that. I think that's a stupid rule. Anyway, I have now relisted it. Here is the link.
