Best QB in football?

Who's the best QB in the NFL. Personally, I think I'll go with Manning despite his lack of playoff success. I think Favre's still great too, despite throwing a few too many INTs last year. Any thoughts? Any players who you feel are over-looked?

I still miss Marino!

Isn't the definition of a great QB winning games?

If that's the case, then give me Brady, who I still feel is underrtated. So many people want to hang his success on the 'system', or his being in the right place at the right time, anything other than to give the man his due. But because he doesn't throw for 4000 yards and 30 TDs, people think he's not the best QB.

Fantasy football has skewered a lot of people's realities about what makes a great QB.

The definition is different for everyone. Some people believe in 'clutch' performances; i.e., that certain players will perform above what one would typically expect if the game or situation is more important. Other people-- like myself- believe 'clutch' performances tend to be the product of small sample sizes.

In any case, I think arguing over who QB's is silly. Unlike with baseball players there are too many variables that can't be quantified. Who has better receivers? Who has an offensive coordinator that likes to throw the ball? Who has a coaching staff that's better prepared come game time? Who has the more dominant RB? Who has a defense that puts the offense on a short field? And so on and so on.

Arguing over QB's is, IMO, like arguing over what flavor potato chip is best. Sure, Peyton Manning is better than Joey Harrington. But once you're comparing QB's of similar talent legitimate arguments can be made for all of them.

Favre still great? Not in the games I saw him in last season...he was actually bordering on pathetic in my opinion. I think Favre is over-the-hill now and it's not even close.

Based on championships, age, and other qualities I think Brady is an easy call as the best quarterback, although certainly a good case could be made for Manning.
  • Favre did throw way to many desparation passes last year, something that happens when you're on a bad team. He still has the arm, though, and I think if he had played for a good offense like the Colts or Chiefs, he could've still put up pro bowl numbers.

  • If winning is the criteria...........
    1) Brady
    2) Roelithisberger
    3) Manning

Favre was great but he needs to hang 'em up. I think he is being extremely selfish by not giving an anwser about retirement this year.

  • Brady. He is doing it without a true number one reciever.

Absolutely, Tom Brady. Great point about him not having a #1 receiver - most games, 7 or 8 guys catch passes from him, and he gets the whole offense involved.

Just look at how many skill position players they have drafted on offense to help him out over his career, EXACTLY not many. Tom Brady exemplifies what it takes to be a GREAT QB IMO the best in the NFL, Manning, McNabb, Cullpepper, Favre, ect... ect.. all are considered by Me to be in the top of the NFL as far as skill goes but Brady edges them out.

Wow, I think too much credit is being given to Brady by you guys. Patriots are a solid team with or without him. I think any number of QB's could win with that team. I think Bledsoe in his prime was better than Brady.

I'm a Steelers fan so naturally I lean to Roth, but I think that Steelers defense puts him in a lot of good situations to start with. Without that defense, he wouldn't have near the wins as he does. One credit to him though is that the Steelers were losing to bad teams when he was out and then went to dominating again when he came back.

I hate to say it, but I think it might be Manning. He's about the only QB that can move the ball at will when his teams needs a score. He drove down on the Steelers at the end of that Playoff game last year like he was playing against the Texans. The Steelers D couldn't stop him even when they knew they had to.

And trust me, it hurts to admit that.
  • wabbitt, in your posts on this board you always seem to have a Patriots/Brady hate fest.
I admit the steelers had a great run last year, kudos to them. At least give the pats their due

OOPS.....thought it was still April 1st and that was my April Fools joke......I cracked up yesterday, went to see the Cavs play the Heat and one of the items they posted to the scoreboard was that the Browns had signed Couch to a new 6 year contract.........yeah one of the worst first round picks the Browns ever made...but then again there was Courtney and then Gerard...and don't forget out motorcycle stunt rider Winslow Jr.....

I think Brady and Roethlishoweverinthehellyouspellit are 2 of the best with a nudge to Brady. Both have excellent supporting casts that take a lot of the weight off of their shoulders.

Not many QB's can win games throwing the ball as little as Ben.

You're out of your mind. Plain and simple...typical Brady hater response 'anyone could win in that situation'. What do you say then about Manning having all world receivers and running backs, having the best team in the league, and still lost in the first round. The play of the team comes down directly to the play of the QB. No, not any number of QBs could win with that team.

So the truth comes out. You're a steeler homer and can't stand that the Pats have won 3 super bowls. Get over it...Brady's the real deal, cool as ice under any and all situations, and has THREE SUPER BOWL RINGS.

Manning has the best stats, but then you can put any good armed QB in that system and put up those numbers, right? Hey it's the system, right?

edit: forgot to close a quote.

Wabbit, you have had a few too many of these - image

I am a Steelers fan also, but face facts - Brady is what makes that team special. As mentioned, Peyton Manning has had a great team around him for the past few years (and much more powerful offensive weapons in Edge and Harrison) and what has he won? Squat. Bledsoe better than Brady? Then why in the world did the Patriots put Bledsoe (in his prime, then) on a bus out of town so they could hand the offense over to Brady, who had played so well while Bledsoe was hurt?

I like Roethlisberger a lot also, but he's no Tom Brady.

Oh, I think you're all wrong ... this years best QB will be Mark Brunell throwing to:

    Santana Moss
    Antwan Randle El
    Brandon Lloyd
David Patten (now healthy and in fear of losing his job)
    Chris Cooley
    Clinton Portis
    James Thrash

Of course I could be wrong ... this years best QB may turn out to be Jason Campbell

  • I think they're all just swell. Manning may be in a different class than the rest, however. The BEST is such an arbitrary title. BEST at what? I'd have to believe that if every QB was a free agent right now, Manning would be the most sought after.

If you had a football team to build, and had the opening at QB, and every QB were available, who would you choose?

Before this offseason, I would have made a huge arguement for Favre but the way he's holding the Packers hostage this offseason is just wrong. He says he wants to play and his heart is in it and blah blah blah.....but then he can't make up his mind and makes comments like he's waiting to see what the packers do in free agency. If you really want to play football I don't care if you have all the Ki-Jana Carters, Eric Crouchs and Tony Mandrichs in the NFL, you come back to play. So now, being a packer fan and having to select a qb that's not favre is hard, but I would have to go with Big Ben. He has everything you might need. But on any day anyone can win.
