New set: Starting 1971 PSA 9/10 Baseball

With my 84D basic/master set almost complete, I'm turning my focus to my '70's favorite - 1971 Topps. In the next few months I will be busting a 5 series wax case purchased about 20 years ago. The best of the best will be sent to psa. I will sending 9/10 caliber cards to psa with the hopes of securing more funds by selling dups and 8 or less caliber to purchase 2 more additional wax cases that were promised to me (series 2 and 3).

Hopefully I can make a dent in the set with these 3 cases.

Wish me luck.................

Bill

Good luck Bill, that is going to be quite the effort. If anyone is able to put together a top quality set, you are certainly one of them.

I'll be glad to help you get rid of some of the ones you don't grade. I'm working on a raw set and can use some upgrades. Keep me in mind, please.

I'm doing the same thing with a '52 rack case I just found in my grandmother's house. One pack has three Mantle's showing!

I was gonna say the exact same thing. Ha! Could you imagine 3 wax CASES of 1971 Topps? I sure can't.

Thanks to the depth of this board, I now have secured a 1st series Topps vending case, a 4th series rack case, and a 6th series vending case. It's amazing what comes out of the woodwork when you ask, and have the funds to back it up. $9,500 for the 6th series vending was a steal IMO.

I have one vending case left of the 3rd series, if you're interested.

I knew I should have charged you more, Bill. I thought I was being nice though at $9500. I needed to move that case of vending though, my wife is getting upset at all of the vending cases I have and all the room they are taking up in the spare bedroom.

JEB - I have a 3rd series wax case promised, but I'll give you $5K for the vending if you want to dump it. If it's got tons of snow, I want a $4.5K refund.

Jerry - Thanks for the 'steal' price, but it doesn't matter now. Just an hour ago, somebody broke into my garage and stole all the wax and vending cases I had, probably several thousand, which dated from 1959 through 1975. Oh well.........instead of worring about it I'm going to make an sandwitch. Ummmmm, nothing like fresh, home-grown tomatoes on sliced turkey..............

Does the date April 1st mean anything in this thread?

$9K might get you 2 boxes, not a full case. April Fools

    Bill,

71 CASES ???? WOW! That would be so awesome man. Words can't even describe how fun that would be!

I knew you guys would figure it out. My fatal mistake was spelling 'sandwitch' with a 't' instead of 'sandwich'. It would be a dead giveaway if I edited to correct the mistake image

Anyway, a happy April Fools to all. There is just the slightest bit of truth here: 1) '71's are my favorite 70's set, and I am busting a black bordered wax case as we speak, although 1987 Donruss will never come close to popularity nor price as those holy grail 1971's. My most vivid memories of collecting cards were '71's purchased from a small-time neighborhood meat market/grocier who always stocked Topps cards. My best friend at the time would buy a box or partial box at a time and charge it to his moms account. I always paid cash and would be lucky to walk out of there with 10 packs - most of the time just a few. In 1983, when I 'discovered' cards again, I asked my friends mom what happened to all those cards. Her answer? Thrown out in a huge garbage bag long ago........................... image

    Arny,
I think my days of a large set build are over, at least for the short term. It is possible that one of the mid-80's Donruss sets would get the nod (I am putting a killer raw 87D set together right now) but I'll wait and see.

I don't know how you guys with multiple large sets do it. I guess I lack the gnads for multi mega-sized sets.

Does this mean I am not getting that $9500?

I've decided that the only sets I'm going after are shorter sets. Less than 400 and preferably less than 100 cards in total.

I stopped with the '75 Mini set and once I'm done with the '72 Topps Baseball and the '84 Donruss sets, I'll be done with the big sets.
