Who here has/is putting together a set of raw MS Lincoln Cents .................

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 11,725 ✭✭✭✭✭
.............in a Dansco type of album and how far back are your MS coins going before you can't afford anything other than circulated examples.

I am putting together a Dansco MS album from circulation and from low budget buys ($20.00 or less), plus circulated versions of older dates. The album is complete except for the 2006 coins, a 1970 S MS Small date, a 1909 VDB, a 1922 plain and a 1931S.

My MS coins go back through 1937. Prior to 1937 I have some MS including a 1909 S, a 1909 P, a 1931 D (plum colored), a 1932 D, and 1934 P, a 1935 P, a 1936 P and a 1936 D. I am hoping to get MS examples back through 1930 without breaking the bank (may have to settle for lower MS coins). After that, getting MS examples from 1909 through 1929 will be a big problem I suspect.

Sure is fun putting the set together. I can see that if one fills all wholes, it would be easy to go into endless upgrade mode.

To further complicate things, the Dansco Album has holes for proof lincolns from 1975 forward. Have not filled the proof holes yet, however if I do fill the 75 forward proof holes, they would have to be CAM/DCAM coins. I have already been working on a set of raw CAM/DCAM proof cents from 1950-1970. It is complete but is being upgraded. I would have to get 1971-1974 (no problem) and then would have to go back to 1936-1942 and then pre 1936 proofs.

Quite an undertaking. Has anyone done this or are they doing it? Thanks.

I am doing it. I have 1935-2006 all complete in MS65RD or higher. I have most of the pre 1935 P mints and some of the mint marks. The minimum grade for my set is MS63RB. It will take me a very long time to finish this one, but it is fun.

    Dickybetz,

I understand that you like to collect toned MS lincolns. I expect that your set is a stunner (particularly if your coins have a toned look similar to the 1936 toned cent pictured in your posts).

My MS cents range from full red to red brown. Some have full fiery orange color and some have tarnished. Some are very clean and some have quite a few marks/contact marks. Many of mine grade in the low end of the MS scale, however a some are gem.

They sure are nice to look at, particularly under good lighting and with a loupe (to see the coin up close).

Do you think that Lincolns will take off after 2009 if the cent is eliminated as a circulating coin?

I have opened proof and mint set back to the 60 ' s and collected the raw set from the second Whitman book .The later proofs are in 2x2 hard plastic Whitmans and the one's from the mint sets are carefully cut and saved with the mint packaging in 2x2's.I haven't opened anything later than 1998......All the rest are still sealed...Some day I might open the rest of them................image

Because I cannot find affordable quality Buffalo Nickels, I have started to divert my efforts to completing a Dansco in the following way: I own all the major players already.....just have to fill the remaining slots.

    Circulation strikes only:

1909-1933: MINIMUM XF all brown to balance the look MS Brown are acceptable. (09-S VDB and 14-D are VF-35...real close)

    1934-1958: MINIMUM 63 RED. ( the three Steelies are a nice 67 or 68)

    1958 onward........from circulation........best coins possible.

This is affordable and do-able. I ain't rich and this set will look real nice when I'm done.

Think about it.........you can accomplish this also.

    Sanction,

The set in my Dansco from 1935-Date are all full red coins. Before that they are mostly RB and BN toners. All of my later date toners I get graded by PCGS.

I think in 2009 the series will take off. With the end of the Lincoln cent everyone will want to start collecting them and the prices will skyrocket. Thats what I think will happen anyway.

I have a set of ms60 red or better going back to and including 1932. Some are between 1909 and 1932 but not many. I do have 1970-S SM & Lg date plus the 1970S-1MM-001. In fact I'm getting into modern cent varieties and am getting new ones almost daily.

I am actually putting together a set based on the change I bring in. Started this about 9 months ago. I am not going out to buy coins, just as I find them I add them to the collection. I have managed to go back to 1957 with only 11 missing. the best part is they are face value cost for me. If one comes along in better condition then the existing I replace it.

I have a number of pre-1930 MS coins that I havent got around to cracking out of the holders yet. One of these days I'll get to it. I sold the PCGS 65BN SVDB out of the set to take care of some bills last year. I'll replace that one later, it's not a priority since the market on those seems to have gone stagnant. On the 14-D, it's just a mater of finding a nice one.... at the same time I have the money. I wont go for the 22-Pl and 55/55 b/c I could care less about error coins. I'm always looking to upgrade the 1934-1958 section of the set with the finest raw coins I can get. I'll try to get a pic or two posted later.

    David

edited to add: I have the memorial set in 63RD and better... mainly much better. The 1966 to 1994, and 1996 coins came from mint sets.

My set is complete except for the 1912D, 1913S, 22 plain (which I don't really count and don't intend to buy) 1926D, 1930S and 1955DDO.

From 1909-1934 they are predominantly XF-AU. The coins from 1935-2006, including proofs from 1975-present, are all uncirculated, all are red except for a couple RB coins from the late 30s to early 40s.

Ditto, except I'm only doing red or really, really nice RB. Here's a peek at what I've got going so far...

I'm pretty proud of my 1959, and also the 68-s, 69-s, and 73-s.

I'm pretty solid with nice red mint state coins back to '28. I am 75% with my Phily cents to '09 as well.
What I need to start working on are the mint marked coins from '09 to '28. I realize I will have to go to
red/brown and AU for some to keep it affordable. These are all in a Dansco.
    I also have a '09-present 90% complete circulated set in 2X2's and 4 Whitman Folders '41- '74 circ.
    pretty much complete.

I'm in the process of completing my childhood collection of Lincoln's. I'm not collecting MS coins at all, but rather nice brown circulated specimens. The set is complete except for 1909-S VDB, 1914-D, 1922 Plain, and 1931-S. The vast majority of coins I've found in change....Mike

My Dansco album has full red Lincolns all the way back to 1932. Beyond that, I start including RB coins.

I've got a set of raw memorials though there isn't a lot of effort in the '59 to '62 and the '95 to date coins.

Most of these aren't real tough in MS-66 but in higher grades they are. Some of these would grade VERY high. My favorite is a stunning and very PL '88-D which is flawless to the naked eye and a 100% strike. I've seen recent proofs that aren't as nice.

I have a complete set of wheats between slabbed coins and raw. When I sell most of my slabbed ones I will break out and put the 14-D and 09-S VDB in my dansco and complete my raw set.

So much less stress and fun collecting coins for dansco's, especially if you are a newbie like me!

I believe some of the best deals in wheats right now are slabbed "brown" coins with toning and luster.

Complete Unc back to 1930. Only have 29 toughies to go. Haven't added to it in quite a while. I'm thinking I'll have to compromise on the Unc and go to XF or better to get the set done.

Great thread! I have an MS set with UNC fiery red back to 1940. Prior to that I have a few MS here and there, but mostly XF-AU brown specimens. All I am missing is the 09-SVDB which I will buy within the next couple of years. I am also working on a PCGS DCAM set of Memorials that is about 75% done right now with almost all being one grade down from the finest graded. I like collecting those because individual coins are under $50 still and they look great!
