Dealers: please educate me.

I have been back and forth on this issue several times, but I have not come to any conclusion because I don't want to burn any bridges. Here is my problem.

I collect Seated Quarters and I prefer to have them in P.C.G.S. holders. I have had several dealers that know my preferences, ask me if I would like them to canvas the shows they attend for coins that fit my needs. I have always responded with, "that's alright," or "no thanks," or some other response to avoid that situation. I am worried that a dealer would get something for me that I don't like and I would have to turn it down. I don't feel great about that, because time has been invested in that intended transaction, and I essentially had him or her work for me, for nothing. I also would not know how to be incredibly specific about the small "pet peeves" that I don't like about a coin. I feel like I would be requesting perfection, and if I did not agree with the dealers interpretation of my opinion, I would not buy the coin. Also, what if I asked for a certain coin, the dealer got a perfect example, and I just did not have the funds to complete a transaction, at that time. I worry that I am not holding up my end of the bargain, and, as soon as I tell someone I would like them to look for me, I am reponsible for making good on my requests. Does the reality of this situation(dealer looking for coins for me) resemble my perception, in any way? What are the best ways for a collector to request someone to do that for them?

I would recommend contacting Mark Feld (Coinguy1) by phone and discussing your needs with him. Not only does he have a very discriminating eye and interest and experience in 19th century type coins, but he is refreshingly honest and will let you know if your needs are realistic.

I am a lowly collector, but I am, in many ways, in the same boat as you.

Generally dealers that offer that service do it on an approval basis.

When someone asks if they can help you, tell them what your current budget is and what kind of coin that you are looking for. If they can help you, they will.

Dealers want to build relationships with collectors.

There are some collectors whom we will not buy coins for on speculation. Just because they need to see the coin in person or they have a hard time making decisions, etc. Then there are other customers that are more flexible (less picky) and we easily fill their want lists.

You seem like the type of collector who really enjoys quality and value in your seated coins. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that! In your situation, it seems logical that you should attend shows and make your own purchases. You will be able to shop for the right coin that meets your personal requirements, plus you will save yourself some money by eliminating the middle man.

If you are not able to attend shows and you need help with your want list, then you will simply have to be more flexible. You can minimize your dilemma by finding one or two dealers whom you trust and work closely with them, but you will still need to understand that you may have to compromise occasionally.

Everyone's gotta do what they gotta do. Dealers earn money that way, so they make the offer. Your reasons for not accepting are honorable and honest. Go with that.
