Garrett Ace ?'s

Is the 300 better then the 250 because I can get one for about $10 more then the 250.

  • The Ace 250 is junk. So many false targets I finally had to just sell the thing and buy something else. I should've known better, though, that I wouldn't get a Lexus for the price of a Chevy.
  • I heard awesome reports about that detector. Maybe I should reconsider??

Thw Garrett Treasure Ace 300 is an old model that as far as I know is not manufactured anymore. There used to be a 100,200 & 300. They were replaced by the 150 & 250 last year.

Over the last year I've read dozens of reports on the 250 and I would say that 95% have been positive.
  • Most people have been very satisfied with the Ace 250......
  • Thats what I thought. Thats the one I was considering. They are $180 on EBay.

One of my detectors is the Ace 250, I like it. Once I turned the sensitivity down it worked very well.
"If I had a nickel for every nickel I ever had, I'd have all my nickels back".
  • That's a problem a lot of newbies have.....They think if they run the sensitivity at 100% the deeper it will go.....not necessarily true. It needs to be where it is very stable.

One of the problems I see with the 250 is the lack of instructions from the manufacturer. You buy it and you are pretty much on your own with it and any help from fellow detectorists is worth it's weight in gold. The little booklet that came with mine told me nothing on how to get the best tuning.
"If I had a nickel for every nickel I ever had, I'd have all my nickels back".
  • i like my 250.....used it just last week at a demo site and found me a sterling ring......i run my sensitivity at about 75% here in fla.....for $200.00 bucks it's everything i expected.....go get em!

  • Don't pull the trigger on the 250! I'm serious when I say it's junk. How about flimsy and hard to read the display in anything but good daylight. Put a rain cover on it and you'll be forever squinting at the little blocks when the cover gets wet. I'm just saying you get what you pay for (not much in both cases). I turned the sensitivity down, way down when I used it, but it didn't help too much. It just squawks a lot and gives off a lot of false signals. After I sold it I bought a White's MXT and am very satisfied with it. You want the Ace 250 as a backup or something to leave in your car? Ok, maybe. But as your primary unit I think you'll be forever wishing you spent a little more and bought something better. Good luck; let us know how it works out.
  • Silversanta...you must have had a faulty machine...

I have to agree with him 100%. I bought one as well and absolutely hated it, i ended up selling it and got another cheapy bounty hunter for 1/3 the price.

Complete random signals, pin pointer sucks...not a good machine IMHO image
I'd rather be driving a titleist

  • Well, I'll have to balance this out a bit by saying the 250 is a great little detector from my experience.
Maybe you guys had defective units ? Highly mineralized soil ? Cracked coils ? Weak batteries ? Electrical interference ?
I don't know, but from my experience its by far the best detector under $500. Light weight, accurate, sensitive and simple and I found well over $3,000 worth of goodies in my first season at depths up to 8 inches - And in woodchip play areas, it just cannot be beat.
Obviously, yes, a top line Whites would out perform it. Not everyone has $1,000 + to lay down on something like that - And to compare it with a cheap bounty hunter is really, really bad advice IMO ... Though what the heck, I suppose radio shack/walmart employees must eat, same as the rest of us.

30AnvZ28, as stated, the 300 is not a viable option anymore.
I'd go with the 250 pro pack if I was you, which includes the standard coil and a larger one for greater depth, for under $300.
Or the standard 250 with a single coil for $50 less.
