Experiment - Quicktime movie in ebay DMPL listing

Since it's hard to judge the depth of mirrors on DMPL Morgans, as an experiment I tried adding a link to
a Quicktime movie of me tilting the coin as one would if examining it in person. I don't have video compression
software, so this is a 3 Mb file directly from my Olympus D-545 camera, which helpfully allows movies to be
made in the closeup (macro) mode. Comments appreciated.

Quicktime 6 or better required and fast internet connection suggested.

Too fast, too jerky, not high enough quality to really tell much.

Moved the coin too fast. Maybe wear gloves.

The intention is just to show the FLASH of the coin, the main photo is for the
    details.

A little choppy but it serves its purpose otherwise.

I was wondering when someone would come up with that. Looks decent, although an MPEG and better camera would most likely be better.

Neat idea! I'd just move the coin a little slower & wear gloves. What made you pick the Quicktime format?
  • Did you have dirt under your finger nails?

I saw dirt under your nails.

I understand that, but a crappy coin can still show a flash (not that this is a crappy coin), so the movie didn't really give me the additional confidence I would need to bid. I would like to see a slower, more deliberate rotation of the coin under light. Also, the fields look a lot clearer and more attractive in the stills, so as the viewer of the auction, I'm left wondering which looks more like the actual coin.

I agree, slow it down quite a bit. Also, I friggin HATE quicktime as it makes your movies too choppy and doesn't have good compression. The quality of playback is so bad I really can barely stand watching most quicktime anymore. MPG or AVI would be a much better choice.
  • Great idea Frank! Like the others though, I'd appreciate a slower moving movie. Do you have parkinsons? image

Remember a few years back in RCC where someone was working on a device to show movies on ebay. He wouldn't give his secret but it appeared that he had the coin on a potters wheel. Did anything become of that? I haven't ventured into RCC much since you know what.

Quicktime is the default movie format for Olympus cameras, which is what the OP stated he used for the video.

  • I would prefer to see the coin in an PCGS, NGC, ANACS holder that says MS65DMPL rather than see a movie of a coin being rotated. The coin did not look DMPL from the movie but rather PL?

I hate quicktime also..but I can get it out of the camera and into the computer on a USB cable.

    I had 9 seconds to

    Press the shutter button

    Watch the camera's LCD screen

Catch the light properly on the coin

    Watch the timer bar

Hold the coin by the edge and show both sides without dropping it

Not as easy as it soundsimage

  • Maybe if you can convert it to another format? It is way too fast. It makes it seem like you're hiding something, even though I'm sure you are not. Maybe one slow tilt of the coin? Sometimes, less is more! But, good job of linking a movie to an auction. That, I'm sure, is the wave of the future. thats exactly what I figured. i happen to think you did a good job. just a little slower would be great to show transition of lighting across the coin, which to catch that dmpl is very hard to do, but you did catch it image IMHO

Proof of the pudding is what the auction brings. Good idea.

  • Great idea BUT!!--How can you tell 5.5" (PL) from 8" (DMPL) mirrors?--heck half the PCGS dmpls don't qualify these days!!image

Not likely considering it's against ebay rules and if it is reported they may pull the auction. (assuming they decide to follow their rules.) Ebay doesn't allow links to sites outside of eBay in the auction.

You can if the link furthers the description. You can't like to your personal website from the auction, but you can link to a reference website, photogallery, etc.
