I just visited http://www.coinace.com and saw something I did not even know existed! Proof cameo Draped Bust dollars. Take a look - and - if you have a spare 1.55 mil laying around ..... Talk about your eye candy!

You need large stones to dip an 1803 proof dollar.

    Disgusting.

Still, I would accept the coin if it

So I guess PCGS doesn't mind grading coins that are OBVIOUSLY dipped...

The feather detail on that coin is magnificent.

What would 1$ buy for you in 1803?
  • These were actually struck decades later. They were probably struck somewhere around the time of the famed 1804 dollar in the 1830's. True fantasy coins!

I'd give you the world, just because...

Speak to me of loved ones, favorite places and things, loves lost and gained, tears shed for joy and sorrow, of when I see the sparkle in your eye ...
and the blackness when the dream dies, of lovers, fools, adventurers and kings while I sip my wine and contemplate the Chi.

Yes, the obvious difference is they were struck using a closed collar. Does anyone know if the edges on these proofs are reeded or lettered?

If that's the coin I'm thinking of, it hasn't been dipped ... the pic is just overexposed.

The price seems out of line, however. Jack Lee's PF66 didn't sell last year at a reserve of less than half that amount.

TDN, what gives with the lowball on a coin like that or the Lee specimen??? I would think a coin like either of those would command a mil+ or then some.........image

I have seen that coin in person, and it is not as white as it appears in the photo. I think the photograph is overexposed. It really looked nice in person. Way too expensive to even consider buying, but it was cool just holding it.

Remember, that this was struck solely for collectors and was well taken care of in its life.

As recently as 5 years ago, gems of these were selling for less than $200k so there's a lot of price resistance. They are novodels and not true series coins so they don't command the respect that some other coins do. They are very desirable in my opinion, but they aren't something I'd want to pay 7 figures for...

I wish I was at a point where I could look down my nose and make derogatory comments about a draped bust dollar in PCGS PR66CAM condition. But alas, I am not, so i will admire this coin, um, I mean "novodel" image
