The 74's are one of my favorite football issues of all time. Centering is killer, would like to see what that 74 rack steve has got holds as I have also eyed it.

How much does Steve want for it?

1974 football has always been one of my favorites,
but it gets no respect only because of the lack of rookie cards.

I've got some racks that I pickup up off eBay 5 or 6 years ago.

    (4) 1977 Topps Mexican Football
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

I have bought 3 boxes over the past few years and I will not buy any more until PSA gets their head out of their a$$es on this and consistenly grades these cards. I have had cards graded 5 that came back as 9's and 8's that became 5's.

They have no idea how to grade these cards.

I just ordered 4 1976 OPC packs. Hopefully will have some stuff in this tough issue to send in for grading!

Go with the '74 football. A very underrated set.

I decided to spread it out:

3 x 1985 Topps Football Unopened Rack Pack
1 x 1974 Topps Football Unopened Wax Pack GAI 8
1 x 1977 Topps Baseball Unopened Rack Pack
2 x 1981 Topps Baseball Unopened Rack Pack
1 x 1984 Donruss Baseball Unopened Wax Pack

I haven't had a rip in a while and I am really looking forward to it. I will show the rip live so stay tuned....

  • I guess it depends on if you have a specific reason for buying any of the three. If it's for the thrill of the rip then I say the '85 wax box. More thrills than in one or two racks and when the 1985's are of PSA 9/10 quality, they are gorgeous. Granted, it is tough because of the black borders but nice indeed. And the stars (Moon RC, Montana, Marino, Dent RC, Elway, LT, Payton, Fryar RC, Craig, Dickerson, and on, and on ...) as well as one of the few times that Marino and Montana appeared on the same card (#192 Passing Leaders). image

I may never buy a GAI pack again. The 1974 fb was an 8 and inside the case it looked good. When I busted it out I could see how the corners had been nicked. Needless to say, most of the cards had a nicked corner.

Centering wasn't so good, which I more than expected from the '74 fb's, but the collation was sweet! And amazingly, the best centered card of the pack was the star.

More to come on the 77, 81 and 85(fb) racks.

Not the best of centering ... but great looking cards nonetheless!

On to the 77 baseball. The centering also was brutal. Corners were pretty good all around and only a few had that rack notch at the top of the card.

The Cooper is probably the only semi-star that has a shot at a 9. The register of the Cooper is really sweet as well, but there are a few white flecks on his neck and to the right. The Fidrych ERA ldr has a weak upper left corner.

Here are the 4 best centered and strongest corners of the 77's. These 4 and the Cooper are likely the only ones that could get an 8 NQ or better.
