Jackpot!!! And a public thank you to Regulated

About a month ago, I get this PM from Regulated. "Who is this guy?" I thought to myself, until I read the message.

" I recently came across a group of Columbian Expo elongates, including an 1891 Mexican 8-Reales. Are you still working on these?"

Um, yep. Even if I wasn't, I would be again! MrEureka had told me about a collection of elongateds from Art Kagin, but when I had inquired, nothing was known about them.

Regulated (aka David) and I have been working together to work the deal on a very unique set of these elongateds. I had the pleasure to meet David yesterday at the Santa Clara show and received the lot of interest. David, thank you for thinking of me when you came across this set. Andy, thank you for thinking of me as well. Both of you are the collector's ideal dealer. Great to work with, let you know when they have something you want, and care about collectors. Again, thank you.

On top of that, I now own a part of Art Kagin's collection. I didn't know Art but have read a little bit since his passing. I do feel it a bit of an honor to now have part of his collection as a part of mine.

Here are some pictures of the elongateds I now have. I will take better pictures of some when I get home. These are with a point-and-shoot with hotel room lighting.

3-Cent Silver - This is really cool. If you look closely, it was actually rolled twice and you can see both impressions.

Thanks for sharing. It's interesing to see the coins that people were carrying around at that expo. Do you have any CC coins in your collection? There is probably to end to what you can find.

  • Congrats on the cool new elongateds!

For those who haven't met David, I urge you to seek him out and introduce yourself to him. A real prince of a guy, and a storehouse of knowledge like you wouldn't believe.

Congrats on your new additions! I have great respect for folks who pursue a collection in which the speed of completion is not directly proportional to the speed of writing checks.

In other words, anyone with a fat enough checkbook could start and finish a complete set of Morgans at a single large show, but I don't think that would work with Columbian Expo elongateds! You must feel as though you won the lottery.

Thinking about the handful of times I ran into Art Kagin at shows, I remember him as someone who always would take time to talk about coins even when he could tell I wasn't a buyer of the item we were discussing.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

These forums are great, I've said "jackpot" a couple times when someone helped me find a very rare item when they heard I was looking for one.

Very interesting. Can you share some more history about these unusual tokens? When I was a kid I put a coin into a machine at the Seattle World's Fair and got something out of it similar to what you show but with an image of the Space Needle on it. I'm sure it's in a junk box somewhere along with my old scout badges, etc.
