The New Jersey Nets are whoopin some A double S

softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,271 ✭✭✭✭✭
The Nets have some really impressive wins embedded in this 10 game win streak. They dismantled the Suns, beat Detroit in Detroit to snap the Pistons long home win streak, slapped around Dallas, and they just held Memphis to 70 pts. They are on a roll.

Finally, Kidd and Carter are playing well together. Should make the Eastern Conference a bit more interesting.

I would be very surprised if the NJ Nets did anything in the playoffs that made the Eastern Conference more interesting.

You are right, Jefferson has been a great young player for the past few seasons - this season he is coming into his own.

Don't underestimate the Nets. The Pistons are a tough team, but anything can happen in a 7 game series, and the Nets have the talent to beat them (already proved that). I liked the Heat to win the East before the season, but as great as Wade is - Shaq worries me down the stretch. He doesn't seem as dominating or healthy as he did a few years ago. Could be a wide open race.

Nets have been doing this for 2 years, go on a long winning streak, then stumble.

The Pistons and the Heat are still light years ahead of them in talent, and that's who will be in the eastern conference championships.

past two years? I assume you are referring to the TWO championship series the Nets reached?, but still, those were Kenyon Martin teams. No Vince Carter, No Richard Jefferson all grown up. BIG difference. We will see.

The Nets have been building their respectful franchise for a number of years. Home grown talent augmented by Kidd and now Carter. They could potentially put it all together if they get to the big dance.

It's going to be the same as it always is. The Nets clean up against teams that take ill advised shots, since the opposition can't get back on D and Kidd, Jefferson, etc. have the opportunity to run the court and score in transition. That just will not cut it against a team like the Pistions, who are disciplined on offense and don't have guards who heave up 3's when three players are stuck in the offensive block.

There's a reason teams like San Antonio are perennial contenders, and why teams like the Nets and Suns are not.

I don't think you really appreciate just how much the Nets miss Kenyon Martin. Yes, he was (is) a total punk. But he is a gifted offensive player and he forces the opposition to change their shot when he's on D. The Nets do not play enough defense to advance deep in the playoffs, and I don't care what combination of Jefferson, Vinsanity, etc. they trot out there. Just look at your history. Teams that have sketchy half court offenses and aren't fully committed to defense just do not win titles. You can not live on transition buckets in the playoffs, since you're not playing the Knicks anymore. Why did the Bulls win? Because they had the best player in the game AND they ran the triangle. The Pistons? Spurs? Hell, even the Lakers could D up a little when they had to.

The Nets have some very gifted players, but they are a couple guys short of competing with the Pistons IMO.

A wide open race? Did I miss a memo, or did the team that's reached the last two NBA finals', has the current best record in the NBA (while playing what is probably the NBA's toughest division), and has what is unquestionably the best starting five in the league suddenly change conferences?

And no, I'm not being a homer. I'll be the first to admit that the Wings are going to have a huge problem with either the Stars or the Flames in the NHL playoffs, the Lions and Tigers suck, etc. etc. But even if I lived in Bangledesh I'd come to the Pistons defense here. The Heat have feasted on crappy teams all season, and would perhaps be looking at a three seed if they didn't get to blow up the Hawks and Magic every third night. The Nets have all the problems which I detailed in a prior post. Obviously nobody knows exactly how the playoffs will shake out, but I cannot think of a reasonable argument against the notion that right now in the East it is the Pistons and then everybody else.

Boo, you may be right. Still IMO the Nets have as good shot at reaching the finals at least with Kidd playing as well as he ever has. Also, the Nets have played excellent defense this year. They are committed to defense. We shall see!

Best of luck! I've always liked Vince Carter, and I'd be happy for him if he reached the finals.

Nets will fall short in the playoffs...Detroit and Miami are undoubtedly the best teams in the East.

Anything can happen in a one game series (read: beating Phoenix by 30+, and holding Nash scoreless), but the better team, in a 7 game series, wins out a large percentage of the time.

Tonight the Nets beat Miami 90-78. 12 straight wins! They still have a shot at catching Miami for the #2 seed.

hahah so now you've been a nets 'fan' for a long, long time? How convenient you mention that only after they reel off 12 in a row, right dope?

    hahahahaha

Bandwagoners ALWAYS try to justify why they like certain teams by saying they've been a fan since such and such year.

You're so predicatble...and I bet you were a knicks fan while they were winning, right? You're so damn predictable!

I'm from Cleveland and am a die hard Cavs fan but have to say that this year it looks like the PISTONS.....the Cavs are still not quite there and I agree with some of the other posts that the Nets just don't have enough to beat the PISTONS....

Doesn't matter to me if Detroit is better than NJ, its fun to see the team you root for do well.

Hopefully they will continue it into the playoffs, but we will see. Either way, it is nice to see a guy like Lawrence Frank work his way up through the ranks to make it to head coach.

Put that one in the book for Darwin Cook.
    Another Buck Williams bucket.

Gotta love those Nets with High Scorin' Mike O'Koren and the G-Man Mike Gminski

Nothing like getting the $6 cheap seats at the Arena and then going to the track after the game.

Sugar Ray Richardson was the man when he stayed out of trouble. When I was delivering the Newark Star Ledger as a kid I was infatuated with a similar winning streak the Nets had at the time which they capped off with a win against Magic and Kareem's Lakers. Speaking of the Pistons, did you see them play the Suns the other day? Un-friggin-believable. I went to store when the Suns were up by 16 and I come back to see them losing by 2 with 2 minutes left. I was pissed. Chauncey is really a great player. I think the league is turning into a Guard based game instead of just a slam dunk contest. I like it. More like the old days. Nash and Billups are good examples of that.
