Under the first L in DOLLAR. Is that a clash or a die break?

I guess that's the third option! I'm confused by the lighting/shading. It doesn't seem to match the other raised areas.

edited to add: these are the seller's images.
  • Looks like a ding from another coin maybe.

I'd bet* dollars to donuts** that's a hard hit from reeds of another coin.

*Betting is not allowed, we know.

**Donuts will be donated to Bear.
  • Does look like a hit from SouthWest to NorthEast... and/or could be a planchet flaw. From the pic it's not a break or clash.
  • Thanks for the fast replies. I'll let everyone know when the coin arrives... 'cuz I already sent payment. Luckily it can be returned.

It's incuse. You can tell by the pattern of dark and light on it. The letter in relief has light on the top dark bottom while the dig has light on the bottom dark on top.

I do not believe it is a clash, die break, or a reed hit from another coin. I believe it is a planchet flaw....Mike

You can rule out clash because there are no field/design margins on the obverse oreiented in the direction of these marks. There is a fairly common clash mark in this area found on Peace Dollars much frequently, but it is oriented at almost 90 degrees from the direction of these marks. Plus a clash would result in a raised defect much like the 'E' on reverse that are found in the Morgan series.

You can rule out die break, again because a chip falling out of the die would result in a raised defect on the coin...not an incuse defect.

I agree with the observation that these marks are down into the coin and not raised off its surface. Once you get the coin, close observation should allow you to determine whether the metal has been disturbed after striking or not.

  • It's a monstrous crater!!

(For sure it's a depression. You can see the way the light source shines on the edge of it with the darkness below the surface).

I usually try to stick with heavy PVC contamination! This is a new area for me. Look out Terry, you've got competition!
