Under the first L in DOLLAR. Is that a clash or a die break?

I guess that's the third option! I'm confused by the lighting/shading. It doesn't seem to match the other raised areas.

You can rule out die break, again because a chip falling out of the die would result in a raised defect on the coin...not an incuse defect.
I agree with the observation that these marks are down into the coin and not raised off its surface. Once you get the coin, close observation should allow you to determine whether the metal has been disturbed after striking or not.

(For sure it's a depression. You can see the way the light source shines on the edge of it with the darkness below the surface).

I usually try to stick with heavy PVC contamination! This is a new area for me. Look out Terry, you've got competition!
