Monroe Commem Question ?

Do any of you more knowledgeable Commem collectors know what the grading points are on a Monroe Commem? I have looked at some 63's that look nicer than some 65's I have seen. Have seen some 65's I wouldn't consider buying. Have looked at some beautiful 64's and I still can't see what they (TPG's) base the grades on. I do own an MS-65, PCGS, Monroe I bought some years ago from Rare Coins of New Hampshire, so I can feel secure in the grade on my Monroe.

  • I can't give you any tips on how they grade them, as I find myself asking alot of the same questions, but I will say congrats on a nice pickup. MS 65 .. Nice image

With such a large price jump (7 times) on the Monroe from MS64 to MS65, I think there is a large percentage of encapsulated MS65 Monroes that are not up to MS65 standards. They have been resubmitted many times until the submitter gets lucky. Just look to see how many MS65 Monroes are up for sale, and how many don't meet reserves.

If you purchased your MS65 Monroe from Rare Coins of New Hampshire, you likely have a true MS65. I would rather pay double sheet for a PQ MS64.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
