I own the 2nd book. The R-4 and R-5 attrubution guide. Its a small pocket guide. It also contains the R1-R3s. Its just an attrubution guide w black and white pictures. I hope to find a more complete text on the subject soon. I bought mine on Ebay for 17.95.
Collecting cleaned, scratched, scraped, AT and ugly POS coins for over 2 years now!
I own both and like them both. The authors of each seek to reduce attribution to one or two unique features and do a decent job of it. Both are highly respected and knowledgeable in the field and reading their works is one way of picking their brains. I recommend both books.

This book does not contain R1-R3 varieties. It is designed for cherrypicking R4 and R5 Capped Bust Half dollars. It is a good deal if cherrypicking is your goal. Often times one will need to consult Overton to confirm the attribution.
The other book by Dr. Peterson is something like the Overton book but it goes at the attribution issue very differently. I bought this book when it came out in 2000. I find it to be very confusing to use, especially when trying to attribute from pictures. One often needs the coin in hand along with a high power lens. I use it only to supplement the Overton book.
For someone unfamiliar with the Overton book it may work well, but it will take dedication to learn how to use it.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
