Have you ever found (or heard of anyone else finding) a hidden/buried, etc. group of Mint State coin

I posted this question on the Metal Detecting Forum and have not gotten any response yet. Thought I would toss the question out on the US Coin Forum for wider exposure.

I have heard of people finding stashes of old coins in metal boxes, sealed glass jars, etc. but they have been circulated coins. Has anyone found (or heard of anyone else finding) a stash of old Mint State coins that have been buried or otherwise hidden and forgotten. If so tell us your story(ies).

This question does not cover finds like the Binion hoard of Morgans or other similar stashes in safes, bank vaults etc.

I know exactly where a "hoard" of mint state coins are hidden -- in the cornerstone of the old San Francisco Mint.

The trick is getting at them...
  • Well I had a fantasy thought one day, about going back in time and trying to get all the new 1956 Flying Eagle cents I could, hiding them in a jar someplace, then coming back to the present and going to collect my booty.

Anyway, I would assume a number of cities on building new buildings probably put in a time capsule in the cornerstone and such.
Some others in time of war would have hidden their money too, even the rich would have done it.
Some businesses would have done so, such as a bank trying to keep the cash out of the enemies hands.
So yes it is very possible.

Years ago, while I was working for another dealer, we had a widow and her son come in with several mason jars full of BU Morgan dollars and one mason jar full of circ. $20 Liberties. The late husband had gotten paranoid, converted a lot of their assets into coins, and then buried them in the back yard. He then had the poor taste to drop dead without telling anybody WHERE he had buried stuff. The son had excavated the back yard from the house to the fence to the side fences to a depth of three feet, and kept finding jars at random. It was killing the widow that she did not know if they had found everything. I gave them some advice on metal detectors, but they never came back so I assume that they did not find anything else.
