Gold prospecting with a detector

Has anyone here ever used a detector for gold prospecting? I have never done so and was curious if anyone has and if they had any luck. I am curious as to how the detector actually adds in prospecting, given the small size of gold flakes.

Here in South Georgia, we don't have any gold....but in North Georgia, they do it alot. Might could find something on Google about it.

Thanks guys, definitely interesting stuff. There are a few places in MD and VA that one can prospect for gold, but it is mostly just done by panning and the "hit or miss" method.
