MPP: (My Pet Peeve) Everybody thinks that they grade better than the pros.

I will grant that there are a few people that grade better than the pros in their area. But for the most part, we are all worse (myself included). Get used to it. I always dislike hearing that it took 10 resubmissions to get coin A into the 66 holder it "deserves." The fact that it took 10 times to get that grade should be telling you something.

The most true statement I've seen on this topic came from Mr. Hall. "Ownerhship adds (at least) a point"....Mike

At least as far as discussing grades from the TPS's is concerned my MPP is similar.

Why when people get back a grade which is lower than they expected does one always hear, "They obviously undergraded my coin. I have another which grades higher and is not nearly as nice as this one."

Why does one never hear this instead? "Well, they finally got one right. They graded this coin XX, unlike my overgraded comparison coin which isn't nearly as nice, but graded XX+ ."

It is at least as, if not more, likely that your comparison coin is simply overgraded as it is that your current submission was undergraded.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • Agreed, with this caveat: TPG slabs are always undergraded when buying, and overgraded when selling to a dealer.

Some people could hang with the graders in one series but outside of that one series they actually suck badly when compared to a pro grader. Yours truly included in the suck badly catagory.

By the way MPP is a person that has been in the hobby for a short time complaining about grades they get.

What if you think you grade better than a dealer that has sold you a raw coin? When the TPGs confirm your grade, does that mean you are a better grader than someone that has done it for many years? Or, does ownership add one grade and (sometimes) dealer ownership add two?image
  • The fact that it DID grade a 66 after 10 tries should tell you even more.
