Toned coins

Hey, I just tried a few searches to see if you guys have ever discussed chemically toning coins and didn't see any posts. I hope this is not a repost.

As a new collector with a particular fondness for toned coins I was bummed to see a guy on the bay selling a toning chemical kit to alter the color of the coins(five per kit so he says). So now I have to wonder how I will be able to determine whether mine have a wonderful old patina from age or if some dude just used one of these kits.

My questions to you experts/numismatist is how can you tell the difference and does it change the value in the market?

I would assume the value is based on each collector as I know I would rather have natural than fake(in more things than coins at that).

Thanks in advance,

If your coins are certified by PCGS or NGC theres a good chance that they have legitimate original toning. Some coins are blatantly artificial, others are borderline, and some are just plain obviously natural. Pictures would help.

Sorry, couldn't resist that big target!

You may want to search on the term AT (possibly overly broad), or "artificially toned". I've seen that term used much more frequently than "chemically toned".
