Is there a coin doctoring technique called "orange-ing" a gold coin?

I heard that some gold coins are given an artificial orange-ish tone to make them more appealing. Does anyone know how common this practice is? How is it done and how does one detect oranging on a coin? How subtle is this usually?

In case this first pass doesn't work, slip the hot coin into a raw potato, skins and all. This will neutralize any chemical changes that may have occured after the first four processes.
Ha.... not really. I'm just kiddin'. Don't try this at home.
Sounds like icing on the cake ....I'm glad I collect copper.
