1914/3 Buff Overdate....story coming soon.....

BuffaloIronTailBuffaloIronTail Posts: 7,484 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm reserching the story for the 1914/3 Overdated Buffs. I'm going to post it here and I'm asking for comments, questions, or things related about this Overdate that I should include.

I'll do the best job I could at sewing up the "fabric" of this story.

Let me know.

I don't understand why it took so long to become known.

Shouldn't this one be a Fairy Tale? image

Because you can't SEE it. This is one of those coins marketed hard for... nothing special. These are not worth any more than a 1914 in the same grade, IMO.

I'm looking forward to what you found.
It is tough to see, but you CAN see it.

Some of the earlier die states of dies #1 and #2 have a fairly evident crossbar. It's easily the equal of the 1943/42 nickel and the 1942-D/41 dime in my opinion.

I understand why some would call this story a fairy tale. Many of the over date 1914/13 coins are so difficult to see, it seems like a joke. However, there are some really nice coins out there. The first time I saw one that I could see without a loop, I almost fell out of my seat. The best not only show the top cross bar, but also show part of the lower loop of the 3. The best ones do not come on the market very often.

There are at least SIX different confirmed dies for this overdate, which confirms that it is a working hub variety. Some have an evident underdigit; others are not easy to see. An attempt to efface this underdigit was made on each individual die as can be seen by the tooling marks around the top of the "4." Had this effacement not occurred we'd have a much more prominent overdate. Die state and, of course, condition are of great importance. Most coins below the grade of fine are very difficult to attribute except by die markers.

Are the die markers for each of the dies documented somewhere? The only one that I am aware of is the die crack going from the rim to the buffalo's head on the 1914/3-S; but I think I heard that this not always indicative of an overdate obverse.

On die #1, there is a moderate die clash under the chin. All seen have this clash to the best of my knowledge, but a few EDS coins MUST exist without it. Die #2 lacks this die clash. The pattern of effacement lines differs from die to die as well. I have heard the same as you have on the '14-S, but I can't confirm it.

"Are the die markers for each of the dies documented somewhere?"

Yes-to a limited degree in the soon to be released 2nd edition of "Treasure Hunting Buffalo Nickels" co-authored by John Wexler, Kevin Flynn and myself.

This is a great overdate. Its tough to find one of these without a really weak strike. The later die states (before the obverse break-up) make for some really neat clashes and die cracks. I like this coin a lot.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

    Thanks for all your replies.

The info provided by all of you is an invaluble addition to the story.

Rather than be too "verbose", and I know I tend to be, I am going to include as an additional rescource the mention of this thread.

I should post my story within the next day or so.....I am at the stage of the "discovery" coin right now.

I will also include reference to the "Third and missing Denver link", which completes the circle.
