Local Coin Shop

New coin shop opened in my area a few weeks ago and I paid a visit today.
We were talking about coins in general, and he asked if I had any to sell.
I mentioned that I sold off my sets of Morgans, Peace dollars, and other coins a few years
in order to start up a modern collection. He asked what kind of moderns, and I said state quarters,
Sac's, Ikes, SAE's, and others. After I told him this he stated that I should go over to a mirror and
slap myself silly for investing in this crap. Mind you he is telling me this while I am looking at his display cases
which are filled with approximately 60% of the stuff he calls modern crap. I was interested in some SAC's he
had in the case, but then just wandered out the door.

Depends really on the context of how he said this.....
Kinda sounds like we rub sticks together to make fire, why would you want to go ahead and use matches
if it has worked like this for a thousand years?
you would never recoup your money.

So why didn't you educate the new shop keeper? Perhaps you could convince him moderns are great and he could carry more stuff you like?

Sorry about that. I just didn't really have anything to contribute to the topic, though I do feel bad that the coin shop owner treated you that way. I wouldn't have told you to slap yourself silly but I would be quite perplexed as to why one would sell off a collection of Morgans and Peace Dollars to buy state quarters. Feel free to collect what you enjoy.
BTW, do you really think this is HBO material? I mean, come on. Who would pay to listen to numisgarble and bad jokes from people like myself?
And lets say you go to a clothing store and try on a suit. It looks like a sack of you know what. Wouldn't you prefer that the salesman say "Take it off, its not cut for you" rather than tell you "It fits like a glove. You look like a million bucks in it."

Aint that the truth!!!
majority being in the 63-65 range. It was just time to sell, and it turned a nice profit. I did not want to get back into
something I sold off, so I started up with moderns over the last three years. Now I have built a state quarter set ms&
Proof, Ike variety set, Sac ms and proof, SBA ms and proof, and sets of SAE's.
I worked my butt of to create high end sets which are all PCGS graded.
I believe when all is said and done these coins will reach high values, when all understand the limited amount of
high end pieces.

I'm not sure if the high-end pieces are actually as rare as the pops indicate. While they might be rare in plastic, with mintages as high as they are with most moderns and so many people collecting and saving them, odds are that a majority of them in ultra high grades haven't been graded yet and may be around for some time. And who's to say that they will even make it into ultra high grade holders when they are submitted? If you are finding them and making them yourself, it might turn out to be a good deal. I could be wrong but my gut feelings drive me away from high-grade moderns.

Could be but I do not make left turns into the abyss, so it is hard to change stickers to someone like the senior balloons party!

I do not believe even with the quantities that high end pieces will show up down the road.
As with last year and the years before, for instance last year I went thru on average ten 100 coin bags
for both P&D state quarters only to find enough 67s for my set and a few 68s business strikes.
The satins were easy to make in 68 with 69s ranging in difficulty based on the state.
I do not believe they are out there, with the crap I see in the bags i deal with.
