Make a long story short...I think I need some help recovering money sent out for a computer on ebay. I know this is a card forum, but have seen the experts before jump in. Paid cashiers check (2k+) , I have a solid address but no working phone number. He continues to email saying that it is in route, but its been 10 days since then. He is avoiding me to some extent, but there is still contact. Hopefully this will be a dead issue here in a day or so, but would love to have some ammo while there is still contact (maybe something that might get him to ship) or at the worse case be able to intitate some action once contact has stopped. I have made hundreds of high dollar buys and sells on ebay so maybe I got a little lazy with this one. Usually not too paranoid, just got a feeling here. HELP!

If you got the cashier's check from a credit union/S&L see if it cleared yet, and if it did not tell them to put a stop on it immediately. Believe it or not Cashier's checks from a credit union are stoppable. From a bank they are not.
Also did you run the address to see if it matches the name you have?
Maybe more details would help?

I have been in similiar situations and it is no freakn' fun. Had a guy in Kansas send me a tampered with Jordan PSA 10 and I sent him a 10K cashiers check. Try to be nice in the beginning and then turn up the heat. Learned a hard lesson and got all of my money back by threatening him with postal fraud. I told him I called the US Post Office and was told by the postmaster to tell the guy that they take postal fraud very seriously and they will come after him anywhere in the USA. Also ask for his phone number and try to talk with him that is more than I had as the jerk did not even have a home address. He did all his emails from a library computer. Nothing seemed to work until I told him I would call the local police and FBI and that I have his name and approximate area of where he lived. I told him I would hunt his ass down no matter where he went to. This was a real nighmare but I got out of it and got my money back. chaz
Could you tell me how to cross reference the address with the name?
Just having a hard time believing I missed this one, but....its has been since the 19th when he said it was shipped. Jez I hate this.

<< <i>I bought from a private individual and with a cashiers check that has already cleared. I swapped info with him from ebay buyer/seller info before sending out the check and it matched his registration/mailing address. The phone was busy when I tried to call it, and now I believe there is something wrong because it is always busy.

Terry - I had a lawyer freind that was in a similiar situation and he sent the local police to the guy's house and guess what .... it worked. You have a number of things you can do so don't worry. Start turning up the heat on this guy and sooner or later he will break. Take it in steps. chaz

Actually banks will use both , one that says "bank check" which is not an official instrument and one that say "official check" which is. Regardless, a cashiers check under some circumstances can be stopped ie lost, stolen, etc. Get to the bank and try to stop payment or if cleared, a copy of front and back. Take it to the local police and see if they are willing to help! Good luck!!!

OK, you're smarter than me.
All I know is to look for the issuing bank and the maker being different. If they are, it's not gold. Thanks for the knowledge, I hope I never need to use it!

<< <i>Great stuff guys. Appreciate the help. If this does go south, I will get some enjoyment from tormenting this guy until the cows come home. Might be a nightmare, but I will have my vengence. One more question. How do you get the local athorities in his area to get involved. Do I have to file, get a lawyer, is this civil or criminal? Thanks again.

I would just call the local police. Why pay a lawyer? Just call the police and tell them that you will provide them with any necessary information. chaz

But before you get to that stage, try emailing the guy and tell him you are trying to work this out and you can't wait forever and ask him a definite time of when he believes the product will be there. Take it in steps and don't call the cops unless it is a last resort. chaz
