Kennedy Connoisseurs....AH variety question.

Why is it so hard to find the Accented Hair variety in a high Cam or DCAM state? Was the process different then than now? Is it a very low mintage coin and there is just not much out there? It seems CAM and DCAM in today's coins are pretty much common place but finding them in earlier strikes is next to impossible or so it seems.

Also, while you are here.....(I know pictures are a hard way to determine the state of a coin) This is a raw AH variety and I am thinking about having it slabbed. Do you think it is worth pursuing or should I just pack it away in an airtight and forget about it? I am a total novice at determining CAM or DCAM unless it is written on the slab so I don't have any experience to rely on....image

The coin is spotless and the fields are very reflective and clear. To me, Kennedy appears to have some frost but again, I need guidance on this one. Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

As a preference ...I prefer the Kennedy Cams over the Dcam even though the DCams are considerably more. The detailing seems to be more noticable in the Cam in my opinion..................JMO....................image

At the time, the mint made no effort to produce cameo and deep cameo coins, so only the early strikes off newly prepared dies had the degree of contrast necessary. This was exacerbated by the fact that the coin was rushed in to production with little concern for strike pressure and die maintenance. Production was at insane levels, activity was chaotic, and quality control non-existent.

These are really only worth submitting if they grade PR68 or better in brilliant, or PR65 or better in cameo/deep cameo. Yours does not appear to be cameo, and if it has hairlines it won't grade PR68 or better.

  • Thanks Russ for explaining that. Makes a lot of sense.

I like this variety and I will just put this one away and maybe my kids can sell it after I am gone for a loaf of bread or a pepsi. image
