What is your best vintage buy off of ebay???

Hi-
I'm curious if anyone has gotten any really good bargains on "VINTAGE" cards off of ebay recently or one deal sometime in your collecting career that really sticks out in your mind as a "STEAL" ... Mine is a '71 kelloggs football set in mint condition for $250...
Hope to hear some cool stories!

Ten 1985 Topps Traded sets for $38 shipped. . .seriously!

Opened 6 of the sets. . .submitted 8 cards total - which have brought in a total of $350 - and of those 8, I kept one for myself and sent one to a friend.
So full of action, my name should be a verb.

Not me, but a friend bought a number of 1950 topps felt backs labeled in title as vintage varsity football stickers or something like that and yes there was a gorgeous Paterno in the lot.

Several months ago I bought a raw High No. Horrors of War Card for $1.00. It got graded a PSA6. They usually go for $50.00+.

Don't remember the member, but someone on these boards claims to have bought a raw 1965 Topps Joe Morgan rookie on eBay in the $50 range that went on to grade PSA 10. I've seen a scan of the card too. Simply awesome.

Here's a list of my "finds" off the top of my head:

    1956 Topps Whitey Ford - graded 8.

    1964 Topps Clemente - graded 7.

    1957 Topps Kubek RC - graded 8.

    1957 Topps Zimmer - graded 9.

    1968 Clemente All-Star - graded 9. Awesome card that I paid $15 for.

There are others too, but for each one of these I've also had the ones that didn't work out so well:

    1957 Clemente - erased border

1957 Clemente - advertised as NM, but had a crease pressed out of it. (Got a refund)

1968 Rose - sold as NM-MT, had about 3 creases in it when I got it (refund)

1957 Colavito RC - sold as NM-MT, had about a gallon of wax stains on the back of it

1956 BVG 7 Ted Williams - had a crease on the back of it. Thanks BVG!

All of my best have come on non-sport cards. I doubt anyone on this board wants to hear about them.

You can really find some incredible non sport cards out there still floating around for dirt cheap prices. That is a completely untapped market.

As for the great raw cards, I don't find many but I also don't tell anybody when I do. Last thing I need is people bidding up auctions on good sources I find.

I don't know what my best buy is, but some guy just stole a 1963 Fleer Jack Kemp PSA 8 from me for $90, so that's got to rank right up there for that lucky collectorimage

2002(?) Chicago National. . .bought a VERY nice looking 75 Aaron PSA8 for $95. Looked at it closer and felt it was actually undergraded. PSA agreed and bumped it to a PSA9.

I have bought quite a few raw NFL HOF cards off E-bay that have graded PSA 8 including John Hannah for $6, Carl Eller for $20, Willie Wood for $15 and Hank Jordan for $10. Two others that come to mind is SGC 88 Dwight Stephenson that I bought for 99 cents that I felt was undergraded - I was right, and it crossed to a PSA 9. I also bought a raw review BGS 9 1984 Dan Marino LL card for $4 that graded a PSA 10 (1/4).

In addition, I've bought several lots of 1950's and 1960's cards, many of which graded PSA 8 and 9.

"Vintage"-wise, two deals come to mind. I snagged a Nat'l Chicle Nagurski PSA 6 for about $4400 a couple of years ago, and turned a nice $1500+ profit later. Another time, I got a SGC 98 1950 Bowman Sid Luckman for about $800 and sold it later for about $2000. I loved both cards, but decided to abandon the #1 (at the time) Bears HOF set to focus elsewhere. Basically, I heard the MOSH train coming.

For more recent deals, I recently took a $125 flyer on a 1970 Kellogg's GAI MINT 9 pack with a nicely centered Kranepool on top from Jeff Brixton, as I needed a Kranepool PSA 10 and thought this may have a shot. I cracked the case, opened the pack, and ended up with not only the second ever Kranepool PSA 10, but also the second McNally PSA 10 and a Rose PSA 10. All were just exquisite copies with snow white borders, perfectly centered - the epitome of GEM MINT. The Rose sold for more than twice the pack cost, and I got 2 of the last 8 GEM MINTs I needed for a potential 10.00 set. Pretty cool.

Lastly, I took another $75 flyer on a perfectly centered BCCG 10 1977 #360 Payton 2nd year card, thinking I may at least get an 8 and maybe a 9 to either minimize my loss or maybe turn a quick profit if nothing else. I got it in hand and saw it looked better than my former PSA 9 copy, with razor corners and edges, so I cracked and sent it and VIOLA!!! the first ever PSA 10 copy of that baby. Not vintage of course, but fun enough to share. The first ever BCCG 10 I've had pan out to meet the "Mint or Better" label, and on the perfect (for my collection) card to have it happen on.

I picked up a 55 Jackie Robinson for 105. Was really surprised at the sharpness of it, sent in to PSA, I was actually kinda disappointed that they "only" gave it a 7.

Well I bought all of these 1972 football cards on Ebay RAW over the past two years. They all graded 7's or 8's. I got my free grades a few months ago and cracked all the sevens and a few of the 8's I tought would jump to 9's. Please see my DELIGHT below. I have the flips if anyone cares to see.

This is copied from my submission page on PSA. The first # is the new grade and the 2nd number is the original. I did great with my loupe and some patience to go through the entier set to find the 8's that would bump.

5 or 6 years ago picked up a sheet with nine raw 1951 Parkie hockey cards, all Detroit, including Gordie Howe and Terry Sawchuck for $89. The Howe graded a PSA 6 and the Sawchuck graded a PSA7. Three of the others graded PSA 7, the other five I have kept raw (would grade 4 or below).

Not a vintage buy off of eBay but a friend of mine asked me to sell his raw hockey collection on eBay (including 2 Gretzky rookies). It was about 500 hundred cards from the early 70's thru 1981. The cards weren't in the best condition either. It turned out that he also had about 600 or 700 baseball cards as well from 1976 thru 1981. He didn't want them anymore and gave them to me for free. Again, they aren't the best condition but there are quite a few late '70's Ryan's, Bench's, Rose's, etc. image

Again, not exactly vintage but I did pick up a couple of PSA 10's for my 1981 Topps Football set for pretty cheap. I got a Dan Fouts for $35 (1/3 at the time and SMR is $150.00) as well as a Ken Stabler for $38 (1/2 at the time and SMR is $135.00). I also picked up a PSA 9 1976 Len Dawson for $11.00 (SMR is $45.00). Also picked up a PSA 8 1967 topps Rod Carew for $344.00 (SMR is $450.00). I'm happy with all those purchases. image

In the very early days of Ebay before you could post images, I won complete Topps baseball sets from 1953, 1954 and 1955 in one lot for $420. The lister made a mistake in the title. I recall he mis-spelled Topps as Tops. He didn't list the year in the title. He listed it in the wrong category (books I think!). I remember there were only two other bidders.

The cards ranged from very good to near mint condition. Two sets were short 2 or 3 cards, but there were some duplicates too. I didn't complain! I eventually had many cards graded , sold everything and largely bought my 2001 Honda Accord with the proceeds.

A few items come to mind,

I bought a 1968 Kahns (small size) Hank Aaron for $40 that I eventually had graded as a PSA 8.

I was the high bidder on a lot of 3 1968 Kenwood Plaza Johnny Bench cards for $115. I sold one for $135, one for $155, and kept the best one for myself.

I won a 1973 Phillies postcard set for $60 that included a Mike Schmidt rookie. I had the Schmidt postcard graded and it came back an 8. It is still the only Schmidt postcard ever graded.

When you say picked up a sheet, do you mean an uncut sheet? I thought PSA didn't grade sheet cut cards.

One of my favorites was a raw '71 kelloggs football set I bought for $700 last year.. Quite a bit for a 60 card set but they are rare in nice uncracked condition. This set ended up producing nine psa 10's including a Griese and many 1/1's.. I also ended up with 33 psa 9's.. The 9's have been going for about $30-40 each and the 10's for $150 or more. The Griese is a 1/2 and so is a Renfro I have.. Both are probably in the $300 range or more on a good day.. Keep on sharing guys!
