Can someone evaluate this 1852 Liberty gold dollar?

I got this on Saturday at that country auction up in Vermont. I had no price guide and just took a chance, a silly thing to do. But my wife thought it was "cute" so I got it for her.

I see no hairlining looking against a pinpoint light source--the lines in the central obverse seem constrained there. The rim dings are noted. Can it be holdered, what does it grade, and what is it worth?

Thanks,

Guy

  • Hows the luster? Looks like a high end AU.

The luster is very much intact. Not killer bright, but pleasing.

I'm thinking some level of AU too.

Some of the highpts look a bit bright (rubbed). Does seem to have some decent luster. Would call it an AU58, though no guarantee of it being real. Most of these in 61-62 holders do not have full field luster nor a frosty cheek either. Could those "rim dings" be a sign of former mounting? A $200 coin?

I think the rim damage will keep it out of a slab. It also has the look of an ex-jewelry piece. However, it doesn't look otherwise cleaned or messed with and is a very pretty coin and with a nice strike and very nice details and color.

I grade it AU details, net XF. Worth a little north of a hundred bucks...Mike
