ebay situation -- am I an idiot or not?

Hi everyone. I have had an interesting experience on ebay. I had an auction up for a 2005 gold eagle 4 coin set. it sold for about $1250. all well and good. Well the buyer had no feedback and has been an ebayer for all of 2 days. So I start checking, they bid on over $20,000 of gold coins on ebay in a day. My action ended sunday and today, I get a payment from this person today through paypal, also OK. But the address was to an unconfirmed address which would negate the seller protection for paypal, and it was for some kind of gold futures or investment company. Now the possible idiot part. I refunded the payment and asked them to resubmit a paypal payment to a confirmed address or send a money order or cashier's check. Did i screw up or did I do right? This ebay stuff makes me kinda nervous.

You did the right thing... Dont ever take unconfirmed payments

  • UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SEND THE COINS UNLESS HE GETS HIS ADDRESS CONFIRMED!! I GOT BURNED ON THIS ONCE... STOLEN CREDIT CARD... AND I GOT ZIP.

Send him an e-mail stating that you are going to reverse paypal and that he needs to update his paypal address to his charge address so he ends up with a confirmed address.
  • Assuming you have not sent the coins yet, you did the right thing. Now we will see if you actually GET a paypal from a confirmed address!

You did absolutely the right thing.
There is a reason for confirmed addresses.
Hopefully the other sellers are as smart as you are.

  • NO NO no coins sent yet. I'm not brave enough to send out anything to a newbie ebayer. I believe I'd have a coronary over the worry factor. I've just been overly careful about the fraud thing. am I obsessing? LOL

I did the EXACT same thing in almost the EXACT same situation to eBay buyer 021871money. He refused to mail a check. So far, the other shoe hasn't dropped image
  • What's the name of the gold futures or investment co?

You made the right move. Be cautious when selling gold.

  • This ebayer is a new member as of saturday march 25th and has no feedback. The name of the company is Gold News Weekly I think.

Right on - you did the right thing. No good you holding the bag - if the buyer is serious, he'll appreciate your attention to the details. If he's a scammer, he'll probably scream and yell up until he's NARU'd image

  • You can set your PayPal preferences to avoid this situation in the future.

    Click the Profile Tab.
    Click the Seller Preferences tab
Click Payment Receive Preferences (or something like that)

There is an option to block payment from US members who don't have a confirmed address. I chose that option.

They had just 1 or 2 (or a very few) at the time. LINK

I think you did the right thing. You will probably be offering this coin lot again on Ebay.image

  • OK UPDATE time. The buyer emailed me and offered to send me a company check and said to wait till it clears, if I could ship item to the address on the check. The same address that was in his paypal payment un confirmed. I checked the website for his business and it seems legit unless someone is going to great lengths to defraud people. The address and all other info matches the website. I said I would agree to this payment option. Did i do right again?
